I bet you anything it's your fuel pump relay. I just went through these same symptoms. Bought a new one for $40 and bingo,symptoms gone. It's behind the cigarette lighter area.

My volvo 940gl did exactly the same, it turned out to be the fuel injection relay. I changed it and the car ran perfectly happy for the next 2 years until I sold it.
take off cover to fuses in the centre consol reachin and push down the large black relay i get this myself on my volvo 940 1991 this relay does a number of things but to long to explain
the car does turn over. that means is cant be the starter. and now the car staarts when it wants to. only sometimes.
