Hi. My 1994 bronco 5.8L xlt is shreding the serpentine belt. All pulleys are in line, I've replaced power steering pump, The problem seems to be the crankshaft pulley, as the belt seems to ride on the front outside edge insted of the inside groves. I've replaced the old pulley with a new factory one. I've thought of putting a backing plate behind the pulley mabey 1/16 " to bring pulley out so belt will track inside the groves. I can't find one from ford, so I was thinking a machine shop could make me one, but they want $180 to $250 which seems like a lot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance. I realy love my bronco, and hope there is a solution. The motor is solid and in very good shape, it has 197000 miles. I change oil every 3000 mi. and just gave it a full tune up and it realy runs great. My e-mail address is [email protected]

Check the idler pulley, it is one that free wheels and does not drive anything and it is the one that you push down or pull up to remove the fan belt. If it wobbles just the least little bit it will throw out your belt tracking. Take the belt off and see if any of the pulleys wobbles and check all the other pulleys as well.

Well if you did not have this problem before replacing your power stering pump, then your power stering pulley is not press all the way in, this is a very common failure from the person replacing the pulley, seen this many many times, and like you sad your belt pays the price, your pulley has to be flush with the p/s shaft period, no recess, remember the bolt, washer, nut, that come with the pump? you still may get them in place to press that pulley(replace washer for a thicker or double up so doesnot bent)
Good luck

Do I have to remove the radiator in order to replace the power steering pump on my old Ford truck?

I would avoid that entire dilemma by just taking out the whole ps pump and replacing the pulley then, seems like a lot of work but it's worth it cuz the radiator removal is way more involved and more likely to cause problems with antifreeze leaks, also you probably only have to tilt the PS pump to get the pulley off so I would not disconnect the power steering hoses until I absolutely had to

If a power steering pump locks up does it have to be replaced?

the power steering pump locking up is the reason ur serpentine belt broke. on front of power steering pump is a pulley which must spin freely. when this pulley locks up, things break...and yes u definitely need a new power steering pump.

To remove or install this belt, Release tension by loosening the tensioner pulley nut and adjustment bolt Accessory Drive - 3.5L Engine Reverse procedure to install and tighten belt to specified tension.

It seems like something snapped in my steering, the belts squealed for a second and then I didn't have any power steering and my cars runs rough now

Make sure the serpentine belt is still on the engine. Sounds like a pulley seized and the belt snapped. The belt runs everything including your alternator which is likely why it isn't running right...eventually it will stall and not start, or, overheat.

Need serpentine belt routing diagram for 1994 Dodge grand caravan

3.3L?
Looking at the engine from front (right side of the Van): Stating at the Top, Going Left to Right and Clockwise:
Over the Alternator
To under the Idle Pulley,
To Over the AC Compressor.
To the Left Side of the Water Pump.
To the Right side and Under the Crankshaft Pulley
To the Right side and Over and Down the Tensioner
To Under the Power Steering Pump
And Back up-to the Left side of the Alternator.
Advise when puting it on:
Put the Belt around everything else accept for the Alternator. After it is around all the rest of the Pulleys - Pull the belt up - tight from the Power steering Pump and the Idle Pulley to form a loop, holding the Belt close to the Altenator Pulley.
Using the 15mm wrench or belt tensioner bar - rotate the Tensioner Pulley towards the front of the Van and then place the belt over the Alternator.

My jeep keeps shreding serpentine belt

Either the tensioner is defective and needs replacing, or the pulleys are out of alignment. I would suspect the tensioner pulley is bad. I am assuming you are installing the correct belt.

When it is cold or wet, I get a loud squealing noise from under the hood when I first turn the steering wheel. It doesn't matter if it is right or left. It does not happen in warm or dry weather.

HI, this is the result of a worn power steering belt. in this case, the pulley may be worn or, the entire serpentine belt may be worn altogether. have the power steering pump inspected for pulley and gear damage. inspect the serpentine belt for worn sections as well.

Most common issue will be a worn drive belt(serpentine)

When my serpentine belt broke three times the problem was diagnosed as the power steering pump. Why wasn't this diagnosed when the tensioner was replaced. I am now replacing the power steering pump and...

That is a valid question, but you should ask the shop that worked on it. Also do you know that the power steering pump will cure the problem? This remains to be seen....You can check one thing though...Look at the belt/pulley arrangement from the side. any pulley that is not exactly in line with all others, and any wobbling pulley is suspect. Serpentine belts are far less forgiving of these items than were "v" belts.
Good luck
