I think you have a "variable speed resistor" problem, it's overheating. It's an electronic device usually located near or attached to the AC motor blower that controls the fan speed. This is a common problem with aging AC blowers with electronic controls.
There's a 10amp fuse that powers the ac clutch relay and compressor. There are 15amp fuses that power the blower motor and the ac control switch. All of those fuses get power from the key switch. The resistor and fan switch provide the ground circuit for the blower motor. I would want to know if those fuses are getting power, and if the control panel is working. You should be able to ground the blower motor and make it run on high, and that should not have any effect on if the ac compressor is running or not. It could be a key switch problem in that the circuit is not strong enough to handle the load from the blower and the compressor at the same time.
The most likely culprit is the condenser fan not working. While driving, air is forced through the condenser fins cooling the condenser and all is fine, but when stopped and the fan is not blowing and you notice the air get warm.
Cooling fans working? If you notice the air getting warm mostly while stopped, probaby cooling fans not turning on. if the fans are working properly, may be low on freon and need a recharge.
That is the blower resistor. 4 is wide open, so, no resistance. I had 4 of them put into my truck. The wires were burnt and shorted the others until the problem was found. Check the plug if you do this yourself.
I had the same problem with my 96 Nissan/ infinity g20. If I turned on the ac the brake & battery lights came on, the AC fan would work but the air did not blow cold. Disconnected the battery for a few hours to reset the computer. That solved the problem. Now, no lights, and the AC blows cold.
