The car has trouble cranking, esp after it's been cranked once before during the day. Sometimes it won't do anything at all when you turn the key, sometimes it'll crank and the dashboard will go nuts before it catches. Then, when you mash the brakes the headlights will dim considerably. When you put the car in gear from reverse, it will hesitate until you push on the gas. Is this the alternator or battery connections?

SOURCE: 1996 cavalier will not crank

when it wont crank, you will need a test lite to ck the small wire at starter for a 12 volt signal when commanded to start by the key. also make sure there is 12 volts from battery going to larger wire on starter. if so and still wont crank, starter replacement is probable. (assuming grounds are clean) they can be very intermittent. another quick test would be while trying to start, holding key in start position, rap lightly on starter with hammer to see if it kicks, if so, replace starter.

-Take a look at the battery CCA (Cold crank amperage). Sounds like
it's low amp.
-If it click but not start or turn that mean the starter has dirty contact or bad connector between battery and starter.

Good luck

2000 olds 3.5 Dohc. Changed fuel filter checked fuel pressure @40 lbs resting cranking 45 lbs When i try and start it in the morning indoors won't fire crank the key to acc then on then back to acc then...

Which is the problem, no fire, or no crank. No fire means to spark to engine, but engine turns over fine. No crank means engine won't turn over when key is turned. I'm assuming engine will not turn over. Three most common problems. 1. Weak battery (get tested at auto parts store). Will hold charge for short time once started, but loses it when sits overnight. 2. Bad starter. Possible but not likely, still not out of the question. 3. Bad battery cables. This is an easy test. Take a pair of jumper cables and bypass the battery cables by connecting black side of jumper cable to "-" of battery and block of engine, and red of jumper cables to "+" of battery and (tap) Battery terminal post on starter...engine should turn over. Ensure you take all safety precautions to prevent car from moving during this procedure. Best of luck resolving this problem.

I have an 2002 Chevy Impala, when I go to crank my car it won't do anything. I have to play with the ignition by turning the key back and forth in order for it to crank. what is that?

Why do so many people ask about an Alternator ?

It has nothing to do with the starting system

You said you have to play with the key & ignition switch
that may be a place to start

HARD TO START

To clarify, the engine cranks and starts. If it cranks but won't start until 4 or 5 tries, I would check the fuel pressure before and after the first attempt. The check valve in the pump may be faulty and allowing the fuel to flow back to the tank when it is not running. The pump only gets power for the first 3 seconds during crank time until the engine starts.

Key turns fine. Car won't turn on. Won't even crank. Sometimes pushing key further into the ignition switch with a bit of pressure helps. Battery is one year old.

What you are saying is the key switch is worn out, and there is a separate problem with the engine performance.
Either an import shop or the dealer are your options here.

When you turn the key it has trouble starting sometimes you turn it it doesnt do anything, sometimes it turns the lights and radio on and other times it starts to crank and doesnt so far it has always...

I would check the ignition switch, these are prone to key and barrel wear, Sounds silly but if you have another key try that as a newer, less worn profile key can sometimes help with a solution
