My 1996 Subaru Legacy makes an intermittent lifter noise. I recently had a new knock sensor installed but the noise still persists but only about half the time.

It is underneath the intake manifold. If you look straight down from the throttle body, you will see a sensor with one wire coming out and a bolt going through the middle of it, that is the knock sensor.
Yes, but there is still a lot of stuff to move out of the way to get in there and pull them. I would try all the chemical remedies for sticky lash adjusters (oil flush, marvel's mystery oil, etc.) first, then check the timing belt to see if a worn timing belt has let it slip a tooth and the valve timing is off for that reason before digging into the lifters. There used to be a forum that had video and audio from a subaru legacy this model before and after swapping out a bad lifter. Google for it and see if the noise matches.
I have the same problem on my 2.0L 2001 Legacy auto. It began about 1000 miles ago. It has now done 84k. From my online searches this is most probably 'piston slap', and is not serious. To save weight Subaru shaved down the skirts on the pistons. With normal engine wear the pistons will at some point rattle against the cylinders until the engine is heated up and the pistons expand. The rattling should go away after a few minutes. If it persists say 10-15 minutes, it may be another problem.
Sounds like worn lifter/cam lobe,quite normal when engine gets a few mles on it.Lifter is finding it hard to fill the extra clearance created by wear.What sort of oil are you using and is it clean?Wear in an engine will lower your overall oil pressure as well,not generaly enough to worry about but it does contribute to the problem.At idle or when cold is generaly when this happens?
