On certain 3 BMW's (E36), the A/c filter (polymer filter) is situated inside the car at the Rh side of the centre console (loosen the cover on Rh side) and look at the rear of the ventbox (engine side) is a vertical panel that clips loose and the filter is slided into a holder behind it. Suggest useing a torch as it is very difficult to see if you do not know where to look for it. On some year models the filter is situated in the engine compartment below windscreen. Hope this can shed light on your problem

My bmw750li has a loud fan noise that randomly comes on. It seems like it happens when I get low on gas. It sounds like a blower going up and down. Could it be an oil filter? Fuses?please help

When the engine temp reaches a certain temperature, the aux fan automatically shifts into high speed. It is a bit loud. Does the fan noise come one while idling for a long time?
tip

Microfilter

The microfilter is an electrostatically charged filter that captures dust and pollen particles (down to 5 microns) that normally are drawn into the passenger compartment through the ventilation system. It is similar to the filter that you have in your home AC unit. Just like your house filter your BMW's microfilter should be changed also. The recommended interval is at every inspection #1 and #2. However, if your AC smells musty or you have decreased blower fan volume change it sooner.

Why is my BMW 730d smell when I switched on the fan

Depends on what the odor smells like. First check the cabin air filter to see if it is stopped or has some foreign substance on it.

Heater blower not working

It sounds like your cabin air filter has stopped up common problem on these cars. You have to remove the glovebox to get to it. If this filter stops up, your fan will be running on high but hardly anything will come out of the vents.
