Replaced the water pump on 96 nissan maxima. timing did not get messed with at all. i had pulled the timing cover but the chain looked good and there was no way it could have jumped time. my obd scanner shows a knock sensor issue (well known fault on 3.0). my cam sensor ohm checks good. my crank sensor shows 573 and a second one i picked up shows 566 (range is 470 to 570). is this my problem or am i missing somethimg?

Sounds like you missed connecting something back up. The Knock senser won't make it not run it'll just not let it run at peak power. The OHMs on the sensers just need to be close and your old senser may be just fine. The senser watches a reluctor wheel go by. Did you put it back on? did you put it right side up? It'll fit backwards but it won't line up with the senser.

I thin your mistaing the slow crank with the engine trying to start. The battery needs to be fully charged, or install a good new hot battery just to make sure that low voltage isn't the problem. You have a voltmeter, connect it to the battery and see what the voltage is when cranking it has to be above 10 volts or the ingtion and the fuel will shut off. standard test need to be performed just to see where the problem lies. Sparp fuel and compression, it's got to have them all. your car is a coil pack car so you remove the wire connector from a coil pack and connect the ground side of your test light to the battery positive and as you touch ground the light will light. with the key on one wire at the connecter won't light the light thats battery power from the key. turn th key off and the light will light. turn the key back on and test the other two wires one will light the light and the other will not. this wirewith it cranking should flash the light if it does you have spark. next is fuel, The fuel filter is behind the engine on the drivers side. grab the hose going to it and sort of fold it in half and while holding it turn on the key the fuel pump will come on for a second and you'll feel the pressure going though the hose if you do you have fuel pressure, You might not have injector pulse though. If you have fuel pressure and spark, then you need to check injector pulse , disconnect on of the connectors on a fuel injector, connect your test light like before to positive power on the battery with the key off one wire will be ground and light the light , the other wire is the pulse. with it connected to the light crank the engine and the wire should flash the light. if it does you have injector pulse. do connect the test light to groud and make sure that the other wire is hot with the key on. if it's not you have a fuse blown for the ingtion. the check engine light does come on with the key does'nt it? If it does'nt your looking for ecm power fuseand ecm ground problems the ecm gets it's ground from the wire that is bolted to the intake maniflod near the fuel injectors. You did'nt leave off any ground wires while changing the water pump, as they are all needed. Compression is last but if it was running OK before you worked on it and you didn't disturb the timing chain then it' has no reason to be different than is was. But let's say in all this work you've gotton te plugs fouled with gas oil or antifrezze you'll have to remove a coil pack and then the spark plug to see. with the plug out and the coil unplugged crank the engine and see what blows out of the cyclinder. if it's clear and some gas vapors shoot out good you know the injectors are sending fuel and theirs no water in the cyclinder. Clean the plug by burning off with a tourch and reinstall. if it was gas wet then do the rest of them too. while the plug is out do a compression test ut screwing in a compression tester, it should be over 150 lbs to 170. less than 100 your in troble. if it is low take the timing cover back off and line up the marks and count the links as in the service manul and see what you got it off by. if it needs to be changed to get it right turn it only the way that goes towards the right way as the other way you can hit the pistons and valves together. All nissan engines will hit if out of time but one thooth off won't break em. with the timing off the crank and cam sensers won't line up and the enginemanagement system won't let the motor run.

How do I replace water pump?

You need to get a repair manuel if you are going to try this your self . That water pump is driven internally by the timing chain. The pump housing also tends to corrode and sieze to the timing chain cover that it mounts to and if you are not a technician i would not recommend that you attemp this job .... you can damage the engine timing cover case very easy changing this style water pump. If you crack it you are looking at big $ to replace that cover.

Timing chain 96 maxima broke

Check your owner's manual for the recommended mileage for replacing your timing chain. Replacement for a Nissan Maxima is 60,000 miles.2 Locate the timing chain. Replace it if the automatic chain adjuster (also known as the tensioner) is damaged or worn.3 Release the pressure in the fuel system, drain the cooling system and disengage the negative battery cable. 4 Undo the upper radiator hose, engine drive belts, power steering pulley and pump with bracket, air duct, passenger front wheel and engine side and undercovers, front exhaust pipe, cylinder head front mounting bracket and head cover, rocker cover, distributor and distributor cap and spark plugs.5 Take off the intake manifold support and move the No. 1 piston at "Top Dead Center" (TDC) of the compression stroke.6 Disconnect the cylinder head front cover, water pump pulley, thermostat housing, upper and lower tensioner and slack side timing chain guide, idler sprocket bolt, camshaft sprocket bolts, sprockets, mounting caps and camshafts. 7 Disengage the cylinder head with the manifolds, idler sprocket shaft, upper timing chain, center crossmember, oil pan and strainer assembly, crankshaft pulley, engine front mount and bracket and the front timing cover. Remove the oil seal and unfasten the timing chain cover, idler and crankshaft sprockets and the oil pump drive spacer. 8 Unfasten the timing chain guide. install Your Timing Chain 1 Grease the oil seal lip with engine oil and place it in the front cover. Verify that the No. 1 piston is at "Top Dead Center" (TDC) of the compression stroke. 2 Reconnect the crankshaft sprocket (marks should point toward the engine's front), oil pump drive spacer and timing chain guide and the lower timing chain. Line up all mating marks.3 Hook up the crankshaft sprocket and pulley, lower timing chain, front cover assembly, engine mount and front mounting bracket, oil strainer and pan assembly and center crossmember.4 Reattach the upper timing chain, idler sprocket (to the back side), cylinder head assembly, idler sprocket bolt and exhaust and intake camshafts. Place the intake camshaft knock pin at 9 o'clock and the exhaust pin at noon. Connect the camshaft bearing caps and distributor brackets and secure all mounting bolts.5 Eliminate any old material from the pan and cylinder block mounting surfaces. Rub on a 3.5 to 4.5mm bead of liquid gasket over the oil pan and cylinder block.6 Attach the upper timing chain to the idler sprockets and secure the cylinder head bolts.7 Refill the cooling system. Hook up the negative battery cable and any other disconnected items. Start the engine and look for leaks.

Replace water pump on 2000 maxima 6 cyl.

not for a novice person. pretty labor intensive repair. you need to remove the 2 access covers (black in color) on the front of the engine. left cover has timing chain tensioner behind it. the right has water pump behind it. you need to remove the tensioner forst and rotate engine counterclockwise to be able to take the pump out. the pump needs to be pulled out with (2) 8 mm bolts which will act like a puller. than you can take out the pump. its not for novice person. it takes me about 3 hours to do that job and i have been working on nissans for 15years.

Do i need to change my timing chain when i change my water pump on a 96 nissan maxima?

Not necessarily. You should at least consider it if you are close to a major service milestone (90k, 120k, etc.). It is a lot of work to change the timing chain (belt), but you have to do some of the work anyway to replace the water pump.

How do you fix the water pump on a 1997 nissan maxima? Where is the water pump located on a 1997 nissan maxima?

The water pump is located behind the timing chain cover. There are two black plates on the front cover. The one near the front of the car has the water pump behind it. The other one has the timing chain tensioner behind it. First you must drain the coolant. Then support engine and remove engine mount. Then remove drive belts. Then remove the two black plates. Push the tensioner in and lock it with a paper clip. Then remove the two bolts holding the tensioner and remove tensioner. Then remove the water pump bolts. Rotate engine crankshaft the take tension off of water pump (about 20 degrees). Then install two bolts into water pump threaded flange (M8). Tighten M8 evenly as water pump will come without damaging it. Check for corrosion. Then replace with new one. Make sure you use new "O" rings. Lubricate with engine oil. Put the original three bolts back in the water pump. Then install timing chain tensioner and black covers. Replace belts and engine mounts. Add coolant and pressure test system.

1997 nissan maxima with 3000 24 valve twin cam v6. I am need a water pump. What comes off to change.

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!

To replace the water pump, you will need to remove all the drive belts. Then there are 2 black covers on the front timing cover. One cover is for the chain tensioner, the other is for access to the water pump. I would recommend you replace the tensioner the same time you do the water pump. The reason is, you need to remove that tensioner so the chain has slack. When the chain has slack, you can then unbolt and pull the water pump out. It could get stuck, so there are bolts that you need that you would use to run in to pop the pump free.

Hope this helps , Thanks Jay!

How to change water pump nissan maxima 1995

Well, waterpump on your car is internal inside the timing chain area, being driven by the timing chain. You need to remove drive belts, the small black side covers, that are screwed into the front engine cover. The left on has the chain tensioner, the right one has the water pump behind it. Once the covers are removed, you need to push the timing chain tensioner inside and put a pin inside of it (tensioner ) to hold it in. Once you have done that, you need to rotate the engine counterclockwise (until you feel tension) to loosen the chain around the water pump. Then you will use 2 bolts (6mm and about 2 inches long) and screw those into the water pump body. This will pull the pump out of the engine, so pretty much the bolts are going to be acting as puller device to remove pump out of engine. reverse install procedure. This is not the easiest of repairs and not for a novice or someone, that doesn't really work on cars. Good luck.
