Double check the timing. If the timing is dead on when it starts and it runs fine that is ok. If the timing is off when it is warm then the vacuum advance is faulty or there is a vacuum leak that only occurs once everything has opened up and the motor is warm. When you set timing on these vehicles there is usually a vacuum line that runs to the Distributor assembly that needs to be plugged when setting timing. This is because it off sets the advance when setting timing. When the engine warms up the Advance opens to advance the timing to maintain time with the motor as it rev's. The higher the RPM the more vacuum that is applied to the timing in order to keep everything clear and keep things from making contact that aren't supposed to.

2005 Ford five hundred sel starts up runs nice and smooth when it warms up starts to have a weird idle like there is a cam loop but never dies drives down the road smooth

How long since a tuneup? Any applicable trouble codes?
The generic info for rough idle on any vehicle is to check for a leak of some kind, fuel--egr--vacuum, something of that nature.

Hi there . I'm having problems with my 1997 Opel corsa utility . It starts and idle smooth but after about 20 seconds it splutters and die , if I press the petrol it starts to splutter and die . Usually it...

I'd guess: not enough fuel flow. could be a fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator. No check engine codes? I would think there should be some that would help diagnose.

1988 Suburban with 5.7 TBI runs fine until warms up. Goes to fast idle and when it comes off fast idles won't start back until cools down.

Lets start at the beginning. Is the check engine light on ?
You have an idle air control valve which could be sticking open or shorted to ground. You should be able to unplug it to test. There also could be a gasket or hose that is opening up and causing a huge vac leak.

Sputters and dies on cold start, significant drop in gas mileage.

You need to rebuild the carburetor or clean the choke linkage and make sure the choke valve closes cold.

2000 catera cold start idles rough and dies. After a few times it gets warm enough and runs smooth as silk.

Did you have battery disconnected or dead recently?

Try to place ignition in run without starting engine for 3 minutes (shut off all accessories and lights etc..). Then shut it off and then start it. Should relearn the idle.

If this doesn't fix the problem, unplug the MAF sensor, if it runs fine with it unplugged, its the MAF sensor.

Exactly what happened on my wife's 01'.

It starts and runs good and smooth until it gets warm then it cuts out and dies. Someone said it could be the ERG valve is that true

Its either your EGR valve and sensor or its the TFI module.
Does it idle good? Then its the TFI module
Does it idle bad rev up and down ? Then its the EGR valve and EVP sensor.

Engine stalls or quits running upon excelerating

There is an idle air control valve that controls the idle rpm, which causes the nice smooth idle. When they go bad, it won't idle, jumping from hi rpms to low enough to cause the car to die. The ones that I've replaced were easy to access and replace, usually on the intake manifold area. This will also give you a check engine light. Beyond this, has the engine had a good tune up lately? To check this correctly you should check fuel pressure coming from the pump, check spark coming from distributor. Good luck. Colin
