Some cars came with this light to help the driver know when to shift to the next gear. IE: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on. It will not indicate when to downshift to a lower gear. It's main function was for optimal mileage and proper RPM shifting. Happy driving.
P0732 - Improper Ratio for Second Gear. P0734 - Improper Ratio for Fourth Gear.
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by TCM as follows:
Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor B: Engine speed signal from ECM C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes
If the actual gear position is higher than the position (2nd and 4th) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.
This malfunction will be caused when shift solenoid valve B is stuck open.
Gear positions supposed by TCM are as follows. In case of gear position with no malfunctions: 1 , 2, 3 and 4 positions In case of gear position with shift solenoid valve B stuck open: 4* , 3, 3 and 4 positions to each gear position above.
Symptoms: Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
Diagnostic trouble code A/T 2ND GR FNCTN with CONSULT-II or P0732 without CONSULT-II is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 2nd gear position even if electrical circuit is good.
Possible Causes: - Shift solenoid valve B - Each clutch - Hydraulic control circuit
as the driver is supposed to be responsible for the safety of the passengers in transit, mercedes (are the only maker),decided that it would be better this way round.its not an airbag light, its a seatbelt warning light.(person sitting down with a ********)
im assuming this is a five speed manual transmission. In this case,YES this is a shift light, this light is supposed to appear when you should shift the car,its supposed to help with gas mileage, and engine performance when you shift at the indicated point.Does it really make that much of a difference? NO. You usually can tell just by listening to your motor, to know the proper time to shift. I had one of these too! More annoying than anything! Dale
