Hi,
The problem is in either the idle speed actuator or the TPS - throttle position sensor.
Have both these checked, the accelerator is electronic and it keeps on thinking that the throttle is down but tries to switch back to idle. Get these checked and let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
Jason

Hi.

The misfire (eg. P030X) is consequence of the real fault. If the other code is idle air control sensor, and the sensor has already been replaced, then it is either wiring to sensor or IAC valve stuck.

Here testing procedure:

Disconnect the idle speed control valve wire and check if the idle rpm goes down.

Remove cruise control cable and throttle cable. Check if the idle rpm speed goes down.

With ignition switch in on position, test the idle speed controller. Ground the Gray wire and check if you hear a click. Ground the Green wire and see if idle speed controller is clicking. With the vehicle running, ground each winding and see if that makes a difference in the idle speed.

Test for vacuum leaks. Remove the cap on throttle body. With the engine running, block both ports in front of the throttle body and see if the idle speed drops. The engine should stall with both ports closed.

If the other code is a P0507, that is Idle air control RPM higher than normal, rather than p0500 or p0501 (IAC sensor) in that case also have a look at MAF sensor.

Resuming

If code is Idle air control sensor (P0500/P0501), then check wiring to IAC control . This is done following procedure above.

Clean IAC valve valve.See: How to Check an Idle Air Control.

Symptoms can also be caused by or vacuum problems.

About vacuum, small leaks are difficult to spot, often there is no hissing noise. A good way to do the vacuum testing is by placing a gauge like this in vacuum lines:

With the gauge in place, spray carb cleaner on the hoses. If there is a leak, carb cleaner will temporary close the leak, and pressure will go up a bit, as vacuum will stop aspiring air through the leak.

I dont think problem is vacuum leak, sensor is also unusual. Check IAC valve and system.

If you repute my solution helpful, then please take some times to accept the solution. Providing good repair tips requires time and skills, and your feedback is important for us.

Regards.

Ginko.

    Not the most common fault.

The broken intake gasket was pumping mor air into injection, that caused the reving up and down.

    Thanks for the update.

    Take care.

Just had the same problem with code saying #1 misfiring. Turned out it was the intake manifold gasket. Replaced it and now it runs great. Spray carb cleaner right at and all around the intake manifold and see if the car runs funny. Worked for me.

Hi! The problem will be on the MAF (mass air flow) sensor. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially on the idle and vacuum supply. If the MAF is faulty you'll have an unusual idle. Have it replaced and you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Try changing the fuel filter. You may be experiencing vapor lock symptoms. Good luck!

It could be several things causing this. Is your check engine light on? If so go to Autozone and have them put it on their diagnostic computer and check codes. This is free and will give you an idea where to start looking. It could be the Mass Air Flow sensor, the ECM trying to lean the motor out, it could be a dirty air filter, could be several things.

If this is something that occured all of the sudden, unplug the vacuum hose from the vacuum booster behind the brake master cylinder. Plug the hose and see if the idle settles down. If it does, replace the brake booster. Let me know, also, what codes have been pulled?

  • Anonymous Oct 24, 2010

It sounds as though you may have acquired a leak at the number 3 cylinder. Remove the spark plugs and inspect for wear and damage. Look around the number 3 injector for any signs of damage.

  • Anonymous Oct 26, 2010

I guess I should have been more specific. When you remove the mose and plug the end with your thumb, you are doing this as a test, then you replace it. Do not drive it. For a number 3 misfire, it is very likely either you have a worn spark plug or an insulator arcing to the valve cover. Check these items and let me know.

What could be a possiable reason my Hyundia want crank in the cold weather, but will crank fine when it's warm weather

Temperature plays a big role in electrical connections. Start with the battery cables and check them for corrosion and tightness. You may also have an issue with loose corroded connections at the starter motor itself or dirty/loose ground connections from the battery to the engine or engine to the body

2001 HYUNDIA ELANTRA AUTO TRANS THE TRANS

You really need a test drive by a tech. Any shop should be able to do that and give you a firm (written) estimate. It might not be a big deal. Shop around if you need a rebuild, If you need one, ask about their warranty. Believe it or not, a good reference for a tranny shop is the Used Car Manager at the Hyundai dealership. Go in to ask him, not over the phone, and be nice. You're asking for a favor after all. Many dealers do a lot of their work outside the store for reasons of cost. It all depends on the dealership. One will, one won't. Ask.

Engine Idle Problem - Intermittant

I've just had the same thing on my Elantra 2001. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it easily; it was a malfunctioning 'Throttle Position Sensor'. They fixed the faulty connection but they said a new one would have cost about 175GBP (275USD) fitted. Hope this helps.

Engine high rev at stop and slowly goes to idle speed.

I've got Hyundai Lantra 1.6 year 2000. It's take time to start when it's hot. When I start my car it revs at about 2k-3k rpm. It also does it when I come to a stop. When I come to a stop it will stay at a higher rpm than that of idle speed. It drives ok when on freeway but uses more petrol. I have changed the water & petrol pump but no luck
