DOES IT DIE OR STALL AT STOP SIGNS? RPM GAGE DANCE UP AND DOWN THEN ENGINE SHUTS DOWN? SPUTTER LIKE IT WANTS TO SHUT DOWN WHILE ON THE ROAD? GIVE ME SOME MORE SYMPTOMS.

  • Anonymous Dec 18, 2010

    HEY DANIEL,

R WE TALKING ABT A 4.6L ENGINE HERE? I ASKED ABT SOME MORE SYMTOMS YOU MIGHT OF ENCOUNTERED. I HAD A 95 4.6L TBIRD THAT WUD STUMBLE ON THE ROAD, RPM GAGE WUD ACT ERRATIC AND SPUTTER WUD SHUTDOWN, IDLING AT STOP SIGN OR CROSSING A STREET THE CAR WUD HESITATE AND/OR SHUTDOWN, OR IT WUD REV ITSELF AND THEN SHUTDOWN OR GO BACK TO NORMAL. i never had a check engine light!

NOW THESE PROBLEMS WERE GOING OFF AND ON SPORADICALLY. CHANGED OUT VARIOUS PARTS, SENSORS AND EVEN HAD THE DEALERSHIP TROUBLESHOOT IT FOR A MONTH AND COULDNT FIND ANYTHING.

I CAME UPON THE PROBLEM BY LUCK. ANYWAYS IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE FREAKING WATER TEMP SENSOR HARNESS CONNECTOR FOR THE COMPUTER(this sensor had been replaced before). (4.6L had two water temp sensors. one for the dash gage and one for the computer)WIGGLING THE WIRE CONNECTOR WHILE AT IDLE, IT MANIFESTED ALL THE SYMTOMS ABOVE. I UNPLUGGED THIS CONNECTION FROM THE SENSOR AND THE COOLING FAN ENERGIZED (and run continously and also got a chk engine). THE CAR BEHAVED NORMAL AT IDLE. i DROVE THE CAR LIKE THIS FOR A MONTH AND NEVER EXPERIENCED THOSE SYPTOMS AGAIN. WAT I DID WAS CLEAN THE WATER TEMP SENSOR CONNECTOR. IT HAD SOME CRUD BUILD UP INSIDE. HOOKED UP THE CONNECTOR BACK TO THE WATER TEMP SENSOR AND FAN SHUT OFF AND NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY MORE PROBLEMS. THIS ENGINES WERE ALSO KNOWN TO STAY HOT ABOVE THE ENGINE DUE TO HOOD BEING SO CLOSE AND NOT LETTING AIR CIRCULATE. I HOPE THIS HELPS OUT.-GIL

.Engine stalls, won't idle, bucks at 3700rpm

Sounds like mass airflow sensor to me or your timing jumped. Probably high miles too, eh? Could possibly be voltage regulator but I highly doubt it.

1997 ford expedition will start but wont stay running unless you hold your foot on the gas pedal. Replaced mass airflow sensor because that's the code that came up. Doesn't do it all the time.

if code keeps coming up re check sensor and connections and if not done replace air filter ----if good than check fuel prssure sometimes clodding fuel filter can cause same problem and set off sensor

Not sure about the idle speed thing, but it sounds like one or more injectors is dripping (not fully closing). That would cause the smoking/gas smell. You should take them out and have a specialized shop like RC Engineering clean them. Might also be the idle issue.
