Don't try starting anymore until you find out why starter is overheating. What was the cause of the car overheating? Was it a severe overheat? If so, it may be possible that the engine is seized now and the starter can't turn it over.

The over heating was from the hose coming off from where it hooks up to block. The gauge didn't show that it was over heating. It does crank over but jus won't start up.

2000 volvo v70. Radio was left on Would not jumpstart...battery takes a charge soon as it is connected to car..smoke starts coming from either starter or alternator and if I turn key on..blows fuse

that question is not very clear, is the smoke coming from the starter or the alternator ??? obviously which ever it is , the smoke will indicate a short circuit in either the starter or alternator and this is why the fuse blows when you switch on you need first to determine if it is the starter or alternator then get it replaced or repaired.

Turned key once, it tried to start but didn't, turned key again but nothing happens except smoking under hood. what is going on with my car?

If you are having smoke coming from under the hood you may have an electrical issue. Check battery and cables for no corrossion as well as tight connections. You may also have a high amperage draw from the starter motor causing excess heat in the wiring producing smoke and may have to have the starter replaced.

How do I figure out if the starter needs replaced _ what are the symptoms?

Yes, it could be the starter. It also could be the battery. I've replaced the battery three times in my 20 year old car, but the original starter is still fine. I'd have the battery checked before I replace the starter.
In another car, I had symptoms like bad starter, but in that car, the starter was really expensive, and on a hunch, I had the charging system tested. The "new" battery was defective, saving me hundreds when I didn't need to replace the starter.

I went out to start my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero and it wouldn't start heard a gurgling noise then saw a little smoke coming from under the hood. I opened the hood to check my oil thinking maybe it was low...

usally smoke indicates a burned wire form too much resistance. you may need to replace both the positive and negitive battery cables with a new starter.
replace those and go from there try to turn the engine by hand. hopefully it is not locked up .if it would not turn the stater may have drawn too many amps and burned your wires.

My 1990 Cadillac Deville wont start or engage starter

Sounds like you blew fuse. Fix fuse and borrow a car starting switch they use at car repair shops. As long as you can turn tumbler to on ,you can start using the starting switch from repair shop..There should be a way to run a start button to start car and your off/on key should be OK

My buicks battery has just died. When I jumped it it goes to turn over for a second with a click and then dies down, but all the lights come on. How do I know if its the starter alternator or battery

if the lights are bright and you hear a clicking and your heat blows good, the head lights are still real bright after trying to start a few time replace the starter (you can try to hit the starter with a hammer otr somthing heavy a few times and then try to start if it sounds better or starts replace the starter) if the battery goes dead try to jumpit if it starts then dies after a few min its the alt if it starts runs good and you let it run for about half hour shut it off and it wont restart rite away its the battery.
