You will need to have the THROTTLE RETURN DASH-POT
on your (unspecified) carburetor tested and adjusted... and the IDLE SPEED correctly set.
Idle Speed and a slow rate of RPM reduction is
critical to the proper function...
Some LESSOR "mechanics" will attempt to raise the
IDLE SPEED to compensate for a malfunctioning
DASHPOT... This will PROFOUNDLY exacerbate
the problem.
Check the choke on the carb, could be stuck or a rod came off. Break it free and lube it. If you have a heat spring to actuate it, the spring could be bad. If it is vacuum actuated, the diaphragm could be bad, the vacuum lines or the vacuum valve.
im not sure what year they started to plug off the adjuster screw put you can knock it out by cutting the edge and pushing it off then it depends what tool is needed a screw driver or a tool for carbs
I would check the float level first if you are going to adjust the carb., carters like to flood and if you check your spark plugs you can tell if your running rich. The other adjustment you will make with a simple vacuum gauge. You should probally check distributor points, and timing as well. More info would help, like is it back firing up the carb or out the exhaust or when accelerrating or decelerating.
