Wow, great description...I suspect the catalyst is bad...(in the exhaust) but try this cheap fix.
go to Advance Auto Parts and buy a can of "SeaFoam" ($8) and following the directions add to fuel and drive for at least 100 miles...see if that helps...if not, have a mechanic look at the catalytic convertor/exhaust
Good Luck

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the rubber fuel lines being old and cracked. The hoses would warm up and fuel would squirt out of the cracks. I had to replace three fuel line hoses and it has been running great ever since. Good luck.
SOURCE: What signs (not mileage) should i observe in a
unfortunately, there are no signs to warn when a timing belt will give out. they just go and can be very costly when they do. these belts are under a tremendous amount of tension and stress at all times and it would be like trying to predict where lightning will strike. think of your timing belt as you would your tires. they are both made of rubber which means the more you use them the more they wear down. the only difference is that you can keep a close eye on your tires rubber. also you wouldn't wait for a worn tire to blow out before you change it so why wait for the timing belt to go. you could be risking very serious damage to vital engine components such as valves, pistons and possibly total engine loss. if you keep up with the services of this vehicle you can consider the use factor of the car and determine for yourself if you think its time but keep in mind the risk you run if you dont know and just let it go.
