I drowned my 1985 2.5td pajero and want to know what to do to fix the engine. i have already blown all the water out by taking out the glow plugs and turning the truck over. what else do i need to do? battery is fine and i have changed the oil.

I think that you will have to pull the engine and do a major rebuild on it . If it was running and you drowned it then the con-rods will be bent and may be seizing on the crank or the pistons and rings may be jamming in the bores.

You need to check that you are getting power to the glow plugs, when the light shows on the dash you should have 12V to the glow plugs, if you do have 12V at the glow plugs and it still is having issues starting then your glow plugs may need to be replaced. You can buy them off ebay at reasonable prices.

please check the fuel filter maybe the filter is clogged already and check the fuel line,if ok check the glow plug one by one at the top of the clylinder head,get a tester to check the continuity of the glow plug.the reading is around 5 ohms.

MOST TIME GLOW PLUG CONTROLLER ON THE REAR OF INTAKE MANIFOLD CAUSES GLOW PLUG PROBLEMS.YOU HAVE TO USE 12 VOLTS TEST LIGHT TO SEE IF POWER GOING TO GLOW PLUG CONTROLLER.IF NOT YOU HAVE BLOWN FUSE OR FUSE LINK.IF POWER GOING TO GLOW PLUG CONTROLLER.THE CONTROLLER IS FAULTY OR THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE SWITCH IS BAD.

My glow rail would come on for a very short time, then turn off (less than 1 second).
Replaced the control wire for the glow relay, with a test lead from battery to relay control terminal - relay was working fine (relay is between batteries).

Checked the engine temperature sensor (located on top of the housing where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine).
Take out and test in a pot of water (need a 19mm deep socket to remove).
At 0 deg C should be 8.6K ohms
At 20 deg C should be 3.25K ohms
At 40 deg C should be 1.5 K ohms
At 80 deg C should be 300 ohms
I replaced the temperature sensor with a 8.2K ohm resistor (engine cold).
Then tried with a 1.2K ohm resistor (engine hot).
Each time I tested the glow rail at the relay (with a multimeter) it would turn off after about 12-14 seconds, which is normal, to protect the glow plugs and battery drain (they come on again when engine is starting).

When I put the temperature sensor back in, the glow rail was working fine again - only thing I can think of is that the contact between the sensor and the plug, may have had a oxide formed and caused a high resistance or open circuit, indicating to the glow controller that the engine was hot and did not need glow activation.
So try taking the plug off the temperature sensor, and reattaching it again it might be all it needs, to clean its contacts.

You'll find the glow plugs where spark plugs would be in a gasoline engine (in the cylinder heads).
The glow plugs will be smaller than spark plugs and, like a light bulb, will burn out and loose electrical continuity. You can check them in place with an ohm meter:
Remove the wire attached to the positive end and mesaure resistance to gound (engine block) through the plug. Unscrew failed glow plugs and install replacements. Carefully clean around the plugs prior to removal (to prevent dirt entering the engine) and apply the correct anti-seize compound to the threads of the new plugs where they screw into the heads. Be sure the wires are well connected without any corrosion or oxidation (no resistance).
Take your time and work carefully so as to avoid breaking or cross threading plugs. Do not wash the engine with water or detergent as the injector pump is delicate.

glow plug relay in the engine bay fuse box, check this they wear out over time.
