I am trying to connect a battery charger up yo my mountaineer and the directions tell me to hook one clamp to the chasis,but I'm not sure exactly where to commect it.

All it is telling you is to make sure it is grounded good, which is the chassis, it is the neg(black) which is grounded so as long as it is a good ground it will charge. Good Luck Tim

Locate the Positive cable marked with a + sign.. connect the red cable on the charger to this post.. Take the other clamp from the Batt charger and connect it to the neg Cable post Marked - or connect the negative clamp to anymetal part on the engine.
I've had this problem also. I followed the instructions exactly and nothing happened. I troubleshot the issue and I realized that the clamp on
to the door latch was not making a ground connection. Try touching the
ground clamp directly to the head of one of the bolts on the door latch.
This worked for me and the hood opened instantly. The quality of the
ground connection seems to be the key. By the way, if you do not want to
use a donor battery, a battery charger will provide sufficient power to
release the hood latch. Good luck!
there is either a direct load or stuck solenoid or something..using a 10 amp battery charger instead of trying to connect the battery to the car will tell where the issue is by the loud hum or buzzing noise you will hear..follow this to its source...good luck be carefull..
Hello: Make sure key is off, open hood, on passenger side near inside of of fender you will see the positive and negative connections that go to the battery. (the battery is under the back seat on the passenger side, you might check connections to the battery for excessive corrossion) When checking for corrosion, remove cables from battery, the negative (black) first then the positive (red) Make sure key is off. If no corrosion re-connect battery. Hook up charger under the hood (black lead to black ground point and red to red positive point. then follow directions on your charger. Remember ignition key off.
Assuming you have a battery charger. Do not plug charger in until after it is connected.
1. Open hood & locate battery.
2. Identify the positive terminal of the battery (usyally has a red cover or red marking.
The battery has side terminals (not posts like nonGM batteries)
4. Connect the + red clamp the the positive terminal wiggle it a little to get good connection.
5. Connect the negative black clamp to the engine block, a handy bracket on engine or the negative terminal on the battery. DO NOT CONNECT TO ALTERNATOR
6. Be sure connections are secure.
7. Plug in charger it should show charging. Leave it over night
8. Before disconnecting charger disconnect power to the charger.
THE FUMES OF A BATTERY ARE EXPLOSIVE DO NOT USE FLAMES NEAR BATTERY
DO NOT ALLOW SPARKS NEAR BATTERY!
If the battery is just weak and not shorted, you could connect a battery charger to the + cable and find a ground to hook the other clamp to & your battery would slow charge & should be usable after a while. You must verify that the wire you are hooking into is a + battery wire to prevent any damage. I suggest you go for the cable from underneath, pierce the cable by pushing in a small nail & hook your charger/jumper to that nail. The charger should indicate charging once connected & you can simply put a piece of tape over the hole you put in the + battery cable to seal it later.

The battery charger has 2 leads coming off it as well as the power lead to the external power source .THE TWO LEADS WITH CLAMPS ON GO TO THE BATTERY THE RED GOES TO THE POSITIVE TERMINAL PLUS SIGN AND THE BLACK GOES TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL.MINUS SIGN, THE POWER LEAD PLUGS INTO THE POWER. AND THAT IS ALL THERE IS TO IT..
Sounds like the battery is dead, you have just enough power to have the lights come on, but no cranking of the starter. Try putting the battery on a trickle charger, or hook up jumper cables to another car which is running. Let it run with the jumper cables connected for two mintues before you try and start your car.
Do you have a battery charger? If you do, connect the red(positive) clamp on the charger (+) to the Positive (+) battery post. Then connect the black(negative) clamp on the charger (--) to the (--)(negative) battery post. Make sure these are hooked up this way, if they aren't, you can damage the car's charging system (big bucks to fix). When you are sure the charger is connected to the battery properly, plug the charger in. It would be best to let it charge overnight. You must then find out why the battery went dead, otherwise, when you go out someplace and turn the car off, you may not be able to start it up again. If it's the original battery it's time to get a new one. You can drive to a major parts store, they will check the battery and car's charging system to see what's wrong for free.Good Luck countrycurt0
