Timing beat 2002 honda civic I want to know what a car acts like if thg jumps or if you need a timing belt ? my car running really bad and backfires when i start it sometimes

mix from a vacuum leak or a mechanical timing issue

If you have a timing belt check that for wear,jumping etc
& maybe the water pump froze overheated & stripped off
belt teeth,just a guess,only you know what engine you have

Sounds like the timing belt may have broke. You can check by opening the oil cap on the valve cover and watching the valves while someone cranks the engine. Well this is a good possibility.If your has lost power,backfires and runs really bad or does not run at all it is good possibility that it has jumped a notch or two. You can verify by checking the timing with a timing light or by removing the covers around the timing chain or belt and checking the alignment grooves on the head and block to the ones on the pulleys.

buy using a timing gun, any mechanic shop can do it for barley nothing. If you start having problems running correctly you might consider to have the timing belt check and replace, you dont want the timing belt to break or jump time, being 92' it may not ever have the timing belt replace. if it break or jump time bad, the chance you take is bent valves. timing belt should be replace every 75-100 k miles

Check your timing belt.Take the distributer cap off and see if the rotor turns when you turn the engine over. If it doesn't, your belt is broken. But it may still be turning and just out of time. Use a timing light to see if the timing mark stays in one place or if it jumps around. If it jumps, it has slipped. Did it backfire when it died?

It sounds like a problem with the transmission. The creaking could be a bad power steering pump or simply a dry/leaking rack & pinion.

With Vtech motors, if the timing belt jumps to much yes you will get valve/piston damage. This type of damage is usually very noticable (knocking, loud head noise, no start) Best thing to do if no damage is noticed have the belt adjusted back into timing. jumping one rib maybe 2 might not have enough to cause damage my prelude jumped and didn't have a problem
