I have a 1974 Super Beetle that needs a new starter. When trying to remove the current starter, I cannot find the top right bolt head. It's hidden from view and when I used a mirror to locate it, it appears to be an odd semi-circle bolt head that seems to fit into a type of v-slot on the starter. The manual that I have indicates that this should be a standard nut. I don't get it!!
Semi Circle bolt was on our '67 fastback. If I remember correctly you have to loosen the nut from the engine compartment. As it loosens the semi circle will run into the body and act as it's own holding wrench.
There is a bolt that runs through the starter into the back of the car right in front of the bolwer of the engine. there should only be that one bolt. there is a regular nut on the end of the bolt. take the nut off and the bolt will come right on out.

tighten head bolts down to 40 nm (29.5 foot lbs) then 90 degrees than another 90 degrees starting in center make sure head bolts holes are clean and oil head bolts thats it
you have to remove the serpantine belt and then the alternator has 2 bolts one top one bottom remove both it slides out put new in put new serpintine belt on good to go 2 hour job
We have a 2000 Beetle. You have to remove 4 allan head bolts and remove the throttle body . Remove it from the large hose. This allows you to get to the alternator . Undo 3 bolts on the belt tensioner and remove that. Undo the electrical connections on the alternator. Undo 2 bolts holding the alternator on to the bracket and pry out. Here's where I just about had a meltdown, the alternator won't fit out past the body work. However remove the passenger side headlight. There is a plastic lever you slide all the way up and slide the headlight out. Remove the 3 torx head screws to remove the headlight cup and the alternator will come out no problem through the headlight hole.

Park your VW Beetle on a level surface, activate the emergency brake and
place blocks behind the back tires for safety. Disconnect the negative battery
cable with a terminal puller. Raise the front end of the car with a jack for
easier access to the starter.
Consider removing the intake and exhaust manifolds on vehicles with a 010
automatic transaxle. This may provide better access to the starter motor. Place
all nuts and bolts in a safe place to prevent loss, such as a baby food jar,
because you will need them later.
Disconnect the electrical connections from the starter. If it might be
difficult to remember where the wires attach, use masking tape and a permanent
marker to label them before disconnecting.
Remove the bracket that secures the starter to the engine on 010 transaxle
models.
Use a floor jack to support the weight of the engine, because the starter
bolts also secure the front engine mount to the transaxle. Also support the
weight of the starter. Remove the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter
motor straight out from the transaxle to remove from the engine.
Take your malfunctioning starter to the parts store with you. Aftermarket
distributors remanufacture most of the starters they sell, so you can likely
obtain a partial credit toward your new starter by exchanging your old one. Be
sure that you take care not to damage the starter in transit, because the
better condition it is in, the more you can get for it
Purchase a replacement starter that has the same or higher cranking capacity
(power rating) as the original starter. Also, match the bolt patterns, drive
gears and electrical connections. Your owner's manual may list specifications
or the auto parts technician will help you determine them. Purchase an owner's
manual at Volkswagen of America (see Resources).
Reverse the removal process to install the new starter. Torque the mounting
bolts to between 33 and 44 foot pounds (45 to 60 Nm), depending on the engine
size. On engines with a 010 transaxle, tighten the mounting flange bolt to 15
foot pounds and the bracket bolt to 15 foot pounds
Lower your Beetle back to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Turn the key in the ignition to see if your new starter motor functions
correctly.
The starter motor is held in position by 2 bolts, the top one also secures the engine to the gearbox. The head of this bolt is a special D shape which engages into the body of the Starter motor. To undo, from the rear o/side wing, reach down behind the fan housing and you'l; find a nut (17mm) with a small amount of the bolt coming through it. Use suitable spanner to undo (turning away from you) If not been off foe a while may find that after a few revolutions all starts to turn. This just means head of bolt has become disengaged. reposition with a long screwdriver and start again.
