My 2000 VW Beetle needs help. Inside the cabin it smells like mable syrup. It does not have an oder outside the car. The temp light is blinking red. It does not blink red all the time. Only for maybe a minute at a time. Most often it comes on within about five min of running the car. Then every so often while driving. What could it be and what am I looking at for the cost of repairs.

not the pump but air in the system or a broken wire to the coolant level sensor
that sensor at the top of the radiator tank has to be completely immersed in coolant or the circuit is broken and the light comes on
same effect id the wire to that sensor is broken in the insulation
On my daughter 2000 beetle with 2.0 engine, the blue thermometer light comes on solid when you first crank it up because the coolant/engine is below operating temp. I have seen the red thermometer blink when the coolant is low.
For general awareness, the outside air temperature sensor is located above the inside mirror. Try to reset the temperature measurement unit:1. Switch engine on.2. Press and hold clock minute (min) and hour (h) buttons simultaneoutly longer than 3 seconds. The display will show new temperature measurement unit.
If the light goes out after engine gets alittle warm, this is normal. Since there is no temp guage, VW uses this light to inform that the engine is cold. When that same light flashes red, it means that the coolant is low or the engine is overheating.
From what i read, the flashing temp light means the coolant level is low. Check your coolant reservoir. See this webpage for more information: http://www.newbeetle.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31569&highlight=flashing+temp+light
