It's been awhile since I worked on a sunfire, it's between the firewall and the engine, right side of car, If my memory is correct, it's a real pain to get out, I used a kum-a-long and remove a motor mount to pull the engine forward enough to get it out, and replaceing it, check it out and let me know.

I had that problem last year. I bought a new starter but it was not the correct one for my car. For the 98 there are two different starters. I bought the wrong one the first time. My step father started to put it one and realized it was not the same as the one he just pulled off. Ending up taking it with us when we returned the orginial one I bought. The orginial one I bought was about $70 the correct one was $400. The auto store did not have the correct one listed as a replacement part. Until the number off of the part was keyed into the system and found out that it was just not the common replacement part.

Hello oldiro: My name is Roger and I can help. From under the vehicle look up between the transmission and the side of the block. Mid motor above the pan rail there is a bolted in sensor. This should be the crank sensor. It will have two wires plugged in to it. Please rate this answer as this lets us know you received the information you asked for. Should you need further help please just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

wrong.starter located right side bottom side near front of engine.do not use anything except crrect size sockets to remove two starter bolts and nuts from end of solenoid to release wires. no other tools required.it may take you a second to finnagle the starter out but absolutely no need to losen or move anything else that you have to remember or fight to get back in place
