I have a 1999 Honda Prelude and experience issues when I put the car in gear. I have to gun it to get out of reverse or else it dies. I am also having to put the car in Neutral at all stops because the engine starts to shake and car ultimately dies if I have it in drive. I have done the following as a check down list. 1. Fuel filter 2. New plugs, wires, Distributor cap, and rotor 3. Cleaned out the Idle air control valve The car is idleing fine and not throwing any codes at this point. I am still experiencing the original issue. What are my options? Please let me know if there is something I'm missing or if this is a common problem that has a direct solution.

Do a leak down test. It's common for early 90's Honda's to have bent valves. a leak down test may confirm it.

Unfortunately you probably need a new distributor. There are three pick-up coils mounted down inside the base of it. They go bad quite commonly. The unfortunate part is; the new distributor will come with a new cap, rotor, coil and module...which you have already bought. The distributors are not that expensive though, maybe you can sell the extra parts???

SOURCE: 1996 Honda Accord Rough Idle Even After tune up

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

SOURCE: Right when car warms up

Could very well be the main relay, limiting power to all the electronics in your car, causing the problems you've mentioned. Have it repaired or replaced.

98 Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC Auto-Tiptronic Transmission Problems

I own a 1999 Honda Prelude base model with a automatic sequential tiptronic trans. If your willing to try a couple of things you might get lucky a save your trans. If my suggestions doesn't help your trans
performance then it time to pull out the pocket book. Drain the trans
fluid. Flush the cooler. Remove the 2 solenoid right by the starter motor. Most likely the 2 metal screens are plugged up. Clean them up with parts cleaner. Then wire the solenoids to a battery so when you spray into them with the parts cleaner you can energize the solenoids while spraying cleaner into the 2 ports. The purpose of this is to free up anything that could be making the solenoids stick. Reassemble the
solenoids back onto the trans. Fill the trans with 3 Qts. of OEM Honda fluid. Run the gears through the gears. Then drain that fluid. Do this one more cycle. On the last fill pour a bootle of Lube Guard Additive to condtion the fluid. Good Luck

Engine dies

this sounds like a fuel pump issue. It could be the pump, or it could be the Master Relay.

1992 honda prelude transmission wont go into gear

Sounds like the pressure plate! Try this, rev the engine for a sec then when it starts to slows down try to put it in reverse - if the gears grind, its the pressure plate which will come with the clutch kit for about 125-175.00.

*rack and pinion is steering not trans! Separate issue??
