SOURCE: how do you remove the tensioner for the timing belt

Hey there JMB,

This is for anybody who has has trouble getting a serpentine belt on. It's easy and doesn't require a prybar or removing the pulley.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

SOURCE: belt routing on my Olds 98 LSS. It looks like I

on the v6- 3.1 yes you do. here is how to change it yourself, first of all, release tension on the belt tensioner. remove belt from pulleys, place a floor jack under engine on motor mount side to take off. put a piece of wood on jack to protect engine. jackup to engine with very slight pressure to hold it while removing mount. take off mount, remove old belt, put new belt on. the tensioner can be moved with a 3/8 drive in tensioner hole. after belt is on replace mount. then lower jack down. thats it!!

Serpentine belt broke and cannt figure out how it goes back on

there should be a belt tensioner you can loosen off. loosen it, feed your belt through then tighten up the tensioner. note - get a diagram off how to feed your belt through all the wheels.

I have a 98 Ford Contour SE the automatic belt tensioner for the serpentine belt went out I bought the part and a new belt. How do I replace the part and belt?"

You need to 'unload' the pressure on he old tensioner by rotating it away from the center of the engine to releve the tension on the old belt-once you remove the old belt, the tensioner is bolted to the front of the engine, you remove the tensioner and bolt up the new one-then, thread the new belt (diagram is under the hood on a sticker) to all pulleys excert the very top one, and use a 1/2 drive rachett on the 1/2 inch square on the tensioner arm to move the tenisoner torward the center of the engine-this will give you enough slack to install the belt on the last remaining pulley.

How do you change a 1998 regency serpentine belt

look under your hood for the information tag on your serp belts routing. It will show you where the idler/tensioner is at. Use the appropriate size socket to fit the nut on the tensioner and push or pull it to loosen the belt. Slide it off and release the tensioner. Then reroute the new belt and again, push or pull the tensioner to reinstall the belt on it.

Where is the tensioner arm pulley for a 90 buick regency

Look at the serpentine belt on the front of the engine. The tensioner will have an arm with a smooth pulley on it. The arm will be under spring tension and will lift away from the belt. There is sometimes a place to put a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet on it to move it. Good luck

How to change the serpentine belt on '98 Plymouth Breeze?

All you need is a long prubar (or you can rent a tensioner wrench at the parts store) essentially a open end wrench with a 3 ft handle.
Put the tensioner wrench on the nub of the tensioner and pull back... this will release the tension on the old belt. Remove it from one of the pulleys, and then from the entire system.
Note how it is routed through the pulleys, and put the new one on the same way.
The car should have a sticker on the radiator support telling you the path of the belt.
