Most of the time there is a tensioner in the middle of the belt route....Usually silver in color. It will have a square hole in it......Its spring loaded. And self adjusts to compensate for belt wear... Use a breaker bar, insert it into the hole and push one way or the other and that should give you slack....It it doesnt have on of them, then usually you have to loosen either the power steering pump or alternator.

How to tighten the serpentine belt on a 4 cylinder 2003 toyota camry?

Hi Tyrone - those belts aren't going to tighten. They have what is called a tensioner - a pulley - that will flex back and forth so that you can put the belt on and off without tension being on it. You'll move the tensioner, pressure is relieved - you can remove the belt. When you release - it will go back to the extended position. When you put the belt back on - you'll move that pulley again, get the belt in place and slowly release the pulley so that it puts tension back on the belt.

What are the symptoms exactly - is the belt squealing or do you see or feel extreme vibration while the car is running? I'm not sure if I have the tech info on the 2003 Camry - but if that's a serpentine belt there may be other issues. There may be an adjustment on one of the other pulleys - I'll look now. If you can reply with exact symptoms I may be able to help you out. That 19mm bolt you mentioned may be the tensioner pulley bolt. Some have bolts - some have a hole where the tip of a ratchet (3/8" - 1/2") would go - that's how you get the pulley to move.

I am try to replace the serpintine belt for the power steering on

This answer is for a 2003 Toyota Camry listed by the Asker under the 2001 Toyota Avalon Category

Click on the following direct Link. It has the Serpentine Belt Diagram.

Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with a Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with Tensioners:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

Replacing the serpentine belt on a 2003 toyota camry 2.4 engine. How do I loosen the tension on the belt? Do you have a diagram?

The arm on the tensioner (the roller which presses against the belt to give it tension) should have a hole in it for a 1/2" drive on the end of a ratchet or breaker bar.

Inserting the ratchet or breaker bar in this hole will allow you to move the arm, releasing the tension on the belt.

I dont have a diagram to run serpentine belt to a toyota camry 03

Hi

Replacing Serpentine belt on a Toyota camry 2003—

Step 1--Examine the belt placement of your Toyota Camry fan belt so that you will remember how to put it back once you have removed it. Refer to the vehicle owner's manual for further information. Locate the pivot bolt on the front passenger side of the engine. Loosen the pivot bolt with a socket wrench.

Step 2--Loosen the adjustment locking bolt that is just below the tensioner pulley with a socket wrench, and then loosen the tensioner pulley to allow the belt to move free.

Step 3--Check the belt for any signs of cracking or irregular wear, so you can fix any problems that may exist with the pulleys. Remove the fan belt from the pulleys on the engine and take it out of the engine compartment.

Step 4--Wrap the new fan belt around each of the pulleys the same way it came out. When you have the belt in place, tighten the tensioner pulley with a socket wrench.

Step 5--Tighten the adjustment locking bolt and the pivot bolt with a socket wrench, and then look over the engine to check that everything is back in place.

Step 6--Turn the vehicle engine on and watch it for a few minutes to verify that everything is operating properly, then turn the engine off.
