It could be the transfer case motor. sometimes they can be resyncronized by switching in and out of the low range 5x. If you don't hear the motor switching then most likely the motor is bad

Can be reset by turning steering lock to lock with motor running about 3 times.
If persists try engaging and disengaging low range.
Probably bad switch and short with warning lights. Or this is a
warning system of big problems. Owner's manual should tell
you what is happening with the warning light system.
Whenever
this warning or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that
the systems control module has detected a fault, it then disables the
system as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook
up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the
system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)
Sounds like a malfunction in your range selector control module circuits or the actuator assembly. The first thing to do would be to scan your onboard computer network for possible fault that may lead you to the cause of the problem.
U are going to have to get this to the dealer for diagnosis of the 2 things, the mechanical linkage and the range selector switch on the transmission, there is really no way to fix it from here with seeing what is going on 1st hand..
