SOURCE: After replacing the gear shift

im not sure what linkage you replaced cause it is electronic. if key is stuck in acc. posision the problem is the ignition switch. the reason i say this is cause when you turn the key it elec. releases the shifter and when the switch gos bad it does not. a new ignition switch should be purchaced from a gm dealer.until fixed you will have to disconnect batt. every time until fixed and i would also use the park brake when not driving.

1972 olds 98 455ci starts and runs fine when its cold but once i've driven it for awhile it starts sputtering like its running out of gas

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.

Trying to replace the speedo cable on my 72 olds 98. How do i get to the cable at the speedometer? do i have to take off the entire dash?

It's easier to remove the speedo part of the dash, screws on top of cluster and around steering column, I can't remember where all the srews are, as you pull it out, reach behind it and unclip the cable, there should be an electrical connector also, now you can reach the cable. I can't remember if the steering column need to drop down, I guess you will find out.
Sorry it's been awhile since I worked on that old of car, but I had a 73 - 442 good luck

Went to change the sparkplugs and wires on my 87 oldsmobile 98 now it will not start just back fires have a new battery too just done today it was running rough today before we changed the spark plugs

Sounds like it has jumped timing. Check to make sure all wires are in correct spots, then see if distributor is loose enough to turn by hand, rotate it as far as it will go one way and try to start, if not go the other way and try. If it gets better one way or the other, you may have jumped time and need new timing chain or distributor gear.

98 oldmobile intrigue just clicks when trying to start it

the problem is with your ignition switch. to check it further, attach a piece of wire to the positive terminal of the starter and directly make contact with positive terminal of the battery. do this with the key in the ignition and on position.
