This mercury is a 1994 V8 equipped. It sputters and and backfires through the breather like it would if it had a carb. It does this for miles even after prior warm up.

I'm having the same problem it sputters and backfires between 0 and 30 then just kicks in and acts normal recently did tune up. Any suggestions? Mine is a 94 grand marquis with a 4.6l v8

Car will not excellerate backfires then dies out. Chugging and sputtering. Sometimes acts completly fine. Clanking and banging coming from underneath the car.

Check the catalytic converter to see if it plugged by checking if exhaust flows freely out of the tailpipe when the engine is running.

Check that the plugs and wires are ok, and then go deeper by seeing if the coil packs (if equipped) are throwing any codes in the computer for a misfire condition.

Hope this helps!

Engine Clugs and Sputter while driving up a hill

Check the fuel filter to see if it is plugged.
Remove the fuel filter, and blow air through it in the normal direction of fuel flow. You should be able to blow through it very easily. If it feels restricted, try blowing through it the opposite way, and if there is a lot of dirt coming out, you have found a common cause of this problem. Hope this helps.

The car sputters and almost sounds like it is missing as you drive it. Sometimes it kinda backfires as you spet on the gas. It has reduced power also. Thanks

Your car needs a timing check. Have this done by
service center having the facility, such as, electronic
timing checker.
