Same here... It wont come out of Park..at first the button would give and then you can change gears but now the button wont..and i have yet to get it outta park..its been like 2 days...2002 and I too had it for six years

wont come out of park, the only way I can get the car to work is turn your key so that it's in the upright position but not to the point that the ignition is on. then you should be able to put the car into neutral start the car and put it into drive. you have to repeat this process every time you start the car. does not fix the problem however you can still drive your car

Yeah i agree with the first response.It is call a park neutral saftey switch.there sould be a spot around the shifter like a little square in the plastic. pop that out and take a pen or something that fits in the hole and press it down. it sould release the shifter untill you can get the switch changed..make sure you hold down the brake so it doesnt roll.

Hi Monica,
You need to see if you have brake lights? If not there is a switch under your brake pedal called the brake light switch. 9 times out of 10 this is the problem on Fords. This is also a saftey device so kids can not get the car into other gears without hitting the brake first. Hope this is your problem sense it is easy and inexspensive to fix.

Hi Monica...

If you have parked on a hill or rise and have place the car in park before appling the parking brake the pin for park is now stuck...
You will need someone to push the car just an inch to repease the parking pin... push uphill... that will releave the pressure on the parking pin...
Remember to always apply the parking brake first in neutral and make sure the car does not move before placing in park...

I would make sure your shifter cable is intact and the transmission is actually in park. The safety switch is located on the transmission and if the shift cable is not moving the shift linkage all of the way into park the car will still roll, and will not start in gear.
