I have a 1995 Audi convertible with the same problem as everybody else, when you release the t-bar the windows go down and the roof starts to move however the lid only lifts 4 inchs and drops again. I have done all the test I can possibly do even taking it to the audi agents. The out come is they say I need a new pump. Any idea who might have a good second hand? Mine has 8 cylinders on top not 6 like some others. Please can you help.... John

BEHIND THE INNER COVER AT THE RIGHT OF THE TRUNK.U MUST TAKE OUT THE COVER..

1 - Flap for convertible roof compartment Note
t The variable convertible roof compartment must be in the bottom position. t To remove flap for convertible roof compartment -1-, hinges -2- do not have to be removed. t Arrow points in direction of travel. q Bend flap for convertible roof compartment -1- on one side at hinge and disengage flap for convertible roof compartment -1- at hinges. q Fold down flap for convertible roof compartment -1-. q Disengage flap at hooks -4- (2x) by sliding it towards front. 2 - Hinge (2x) q Bend flap for convertible roof compartment -1- on one side at hinge and disengage flap for convertible roof compartment -1- at hinges. q Unscrew bolt -3-. q Disengage hinge -2- from body. 3 - Bolt (2x) 4 - Hook 5 - Variable convertible roof compartment

THEN REMOVE THESE..

1 - Side trim (right-side) t Removing - Take out floor covering in luggage compartment. - Remove rear cross panel trim ? Chapter. - Remove trim for handle mounting ? Chapter. - Remove flap for convertible roof compartment ? Chapter. - Remove luggage compartment light ? Chapter. - Unfasten clip -2-. - Pull off side trim (right-side) -1- in direction of arrow. t Installing Note
t Following installation, make sure seal is properly in position over trim. - Install trim in reverse order of removal. 2 - Clip

UNDER THIS TRIM U WILL FIND THE MOTOR WITH THE TANK.USE HYDRAULIC OIL THAT U PUT AT THE STEERING RESERVOIR......BEWARE THE SAE OF THE OIL!!!!!

no need to convert.
the electic roof can be opened manually by:-
unlock the roof using the handle on top of the windscreen and push roof back as far as posible.
lift flaps adjacent to door pillers
you will see a small lever which can be retracted (both sides)
when these levers are retracted the roof will push down fully into its compartment
when erecting the roof ensure that the two levers are fully open to accept the roof retaing lugs

I believe that the motor went bad on you that lets the roof to open or close but also you could have a connection problem or short in the wires. Have you in the past heard the motor move the roof open or close or never noticed it at all?

Check fuses and relays first. Then check the wire connections at the motor. Sometimes the plugs get corroded and just need cleaned up and put back on.

Can you first look in the owners manual , there is a procedure for simple solutions .

If there is a problem with the shelf in the trunk the roof will not function properly.

open the trunk and pull the lever , does the shelf move up and down or is it jammed .

If it does not work the shelf needs replacement .

Ascan tool may be needed to read ant logged faults .

This has happened to my wife's 2004 A4 Convertible 2x's. I had to read the owner's manual several times to get the job done correctly (pages in the high 70's to low 80's) ...the following is offered from memory: The handle/tool needed to accomplish the task 'manually' is located in the fuse box on the LEFT SIDE of the dashboard. A small flat blade screwdriver will enable you to pry open the fuse cover & gain access to the handle/tool. Slight twist the tool and it comes out easily. Tool is a "T" shaped handle. Once you have the handle/tool IN HAND, simply turn the RED part (only) on the handle until it 'locks' in an open position. Leaves a small space on the handle. Can't recall if you go clockwise or counterclockwise, but it will be evident. Now...move both front seats forward and tilt them to gain access to rear seat. Remove the ski boot cover in middle of the rear seat and put aside. Then, 'click' the interior boot cover panel down to gain access to a 'hole' (about size of a 50 cent piece) in the top of the boot space. This hole allows you to insert (upward) the above mentioned tool into a lock/unlock mechanism in the rear deck just forward of the trunk. The tool needs to be jiggled to go 'all the way' in...you will sense that. Once in, TURN the RED part of the handle to "LOCK" the handle into the mechanism. The tool will hang down by itself. My approach is to 'store' the roof in the open convertible position first. The front portion of the roof should be partially forward as that appears to 'release' a lever within the roof's up/down mechanism to allow you to raise the rear window portion. Thus, lift (with that friend) the rear window portion up and forward (takes some effort). The roof now has a kind of 'clamshell' appearance front & rear. The front may even flop forward but tht's OK. This step exposes the rear deck. Twist the tool to unlock the rear deck. It should click & release and a small space appears enabling you to use hands (that friend again) under it (the deck). Lift the deck up & back until the hydraulics kick in and keep the deck vertically open. Now you are ready to tackle the roof & rear window for storage under the rear deck cover. Get a friend, if possible to help with the lifting...remember, this is a "Manual" job! Once here, gently push back & lower the rear window portion of the roof into the open storage area simultaneously followed by the remainder of the roof itself. Watch fingers for possible pinching in the levers, etc., during this part of operation Hopefully you now have the roof & rear window stored in the area in front of trunk and be able to lower the rear deck to almost closed position. If so, go back to the tool and twist it to 'lock' the deck in place with roof stored. Remove tool from the ski storage area by reversing procedure above. Now comes the "Moment of Truth"! With the ignition turned on and car running, use the roof switch to bring the stored roof up and all the way to the closed position. Don't forget you must keep your finger on that switch until the operation completely finishes. Then, reverse the process to open & store the roof for a good blow dry (drive)!

I just went through HELL because my top would not go down! I did EVERY possible solution with NO AVAIL! So anyway, Im in the trunk and noticed a baggy sack hanging in the trunk.. So I figured it was for the roof.. Anyway the sack has 2 straps to hold it up for more room when the top is UP. So I said "I Wonder...." I released the straps and the bag hung again, and GUESS WHAT? Yea the roof works!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The window can be replaced just go to a foreign car used auto parts or junkyard or go to your nearest dealer for your car and have it done.

Open roof latch over windshild.
Raise rear of roof off of hatch
Lift little hatch tabs to access lift mechanism
Release latches on each side with fingers
Lift Hatch with free hand
Let roof fall into storage compartment
Click hatch shut.
Reverse proceedure to put back up.

its a 1996 saab. the red handle only releases the back motor which controls the front of the top. the trick seems to be to get the back window released.
