Took engine & tranny out of 97 and put into 96 Cavalier. Now when I turn the key, the starter will NOT engage. Need help figuring out what needs to be done. Thanks
The 96 was a 2.4 but the engine had been removed. I took the tranny out along with the wiring harness, computer, etc. - everything. Vin # for 96 is 1G1JF12T2T7274692
The 97 was a 2.2 and I took engine, tranny, computer, wiring harness, key lock, from it and put into the 96
Vin # for 97 is 1G1JC1242V7339321
The 97 was running before I took everything out. As I stated, now when I turn the key on, the starter does not engage.

Dan, still trying different things for now. Did you find out anything regarding wiring?? Can start car - manually with starter - but it pops and backfires.

I assume they are both 2.2 ? Did one have a black valve cover and the other silver? Did the 8th digit in the vin on both vehicles match? Did you change the engine control module with the engine? If you give me the vin on the car you are building and the one you used for parts ,I can see what it has for theft deterent. It's possible you just need to relearn the key switch if you changed the computer.Let me know , DanI assume they are both 2.2 ? Did one have a black valve cover and the other silver? I've had a 96,97, and a 98 you have to use the steering column and gauges out of the 97 cavaliers have anti theft ignitions the computer reads codes from the ignition and the cluster and it wont start it they both dont match the computer i had a similar problem need any more help hit me up at [email protected]
You will also need to swap the speedo cluster. thats where the anti theft module is located. After that you may still need to relearn the key switch.I will look at the wiring diagrams and get back to you on the starter circut in side the vehicle. You may have to change some other things.Talk to ya soon. Dan

Where is the hissing coming from? Could it be coming from the engine compartment? Maybe the starter is spinning, and not engaging. Have someone turn the key and you watch and listen to the starter.
Best suggestion is go to your local GM parts department and as them for a print up.
If they are not sure about giving you one tell him you need some parts just have to be able to get it
apart and figure out which parts it is exactly you need.
A good partsman will even help you out.
Cheers
my next step is to MANUALLY attempt to see if this engine will turn. Disconnect battery, remove starter completely which will expose the flywheel. With a HEAVY flat blade screwdriver partially inserted by a tooth in the flywheel, exert pressure in a pivot movement trying to move the flywheel . If it doesn't move the engine is seized.
