I have 96 Avalon with these exact symptoms. Car starts and runs good until it warms up....like after running highway speeds and then slowing down to traffic lights, then Car idles really really rough. Almost like it wants to stall. I did tap on top of the EGR valve and it comes back to regular idle.....but then drive around the block and it is rough idle again. I also tapped the valve(is this the vsv) that has a vacuum pipe leading to the EGR sensor & it comes back to regular idle on saying this i have replaced idle speed control after also tapping & idle returning to regular i have also swapped air flow meter but rough idle still persist as described above by previous person. My car is Camry V6 2000 model 1MZ FE which is the same as a Avalon V6. I have no eng light on as yet could it be erg vavle egr vsv or the vacuum modulator & where would the last 2 items be located.

If you tap the EGR valve and you get a response replace it

You have one of two very common problems.
Number one may be a stuck open EGR valve
Number two would be a failing Idle Air Control valve (IAC).
Try this: Open the hood & locate the EGR valve, close to the firewall, behind the intake. Find & take with you a small hammer. The next time that it happens, open the hood & tap on the EGR valve. If it is sticking "open" the tapping may dislodge the carbon particles that are keeping it open. When the EGR valve is open, exhaust is getting into the intake at idle, and this will def stall out the car.
There is no repair to the IAC valve, it would need to be replaced if it is bad.
One of these two scenarios will cure your problem, I see it every day.

SOURCE: have a 96 camry 4

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

sounds like you have a problem with the spark the coil may be on its way out or there may be oil in the spark plug holls shorting out the spark.
your best bet is to pull the leads out 1 at a time and and look down and check for oil if there is oil there get a new rocker cover gasket.
if no oil refit plug leads loosely and start the car remove one lead at a time slowly and look at the spark cumming out the end off the lead is it blue? if so it is ok if it is yellow and dull you have a coil problem. also check that the spark is only coming out the end of the lead as it may be coming out the side of the lead and shorting to earth,
you can do this by slowly moving the lead around the top of the spark plug holl and see were the spark is coming from

be carfull no to shock your self as it hearts like hell

good luck

When accessing a highway from a frontage road access should you begin accelerating as you approach the highway or wait until you are on the highway to incresse speed

Accelerate while on the "on ramp" until you reach the speed limit + posted on the highway... this way when you reach the highway you will be going the same speed(or close) as the other vehicles ..you can blend in easily.. and NOT cause an accident by going too slow!! On the way down the "on ramp".. start looking at the traffic coming on the highway to find an opening to ease into safely. Use your mirrors and BLINKER... (its easier to slow down a little than speed up)

Car hesitates at higher speeds

Plugs and wires, air filters are a good start, and fuel filter. If this doesn't help consider checking the psi on the fuel pump.
