Sarting On my 1983 280zx, the fuel pump does not initiate upon turning the key on. Here's the situation. The fuel pump, fuel pump relay, battery, and fuse have all been replaced. The car did start and run fine. I removed the battery cable to replace the alternator, and now the fuel pump won't initiate. When turning the key on you hear the fuel pump relay actuate, but the pump does not initiate for five seconds like it should. What do you think.

I have the same problem with my 1977z,  I have replaced the; cold start valve, thermotime switch, temp sensor, AFM, computer, fuel pump relays. still the pump will not come on in the "ON" position.  I ran a 12v jumper to the fuel pump and it comes on, but still hard to start.  The car eventually start because the AFM flap opens during starting, and turns on the fuel pump.

If you have fixed your problem, I would be so grateful for your input.

    Thanks.  Alan K.

Try cleaning the connector under your Air Flow Meter. Its that box that the air intake goes to before going to the engine. If that isnt working, your fuel pump wont either, as it has control over your fuel pump.

Seems air flow component could be the culprit but i would also check the wire harness under the hatch carpet theres an acess hatch for fuel pump acess check conn at the harness for fuel pump also try to wire to direct 12 volt supply to see if pump has bad spot on armature it has happened to us as the brushes wear out , give pump a sharp swat with nylon hammer while key is on be careful not to hit hoses or wires good luck

I have a 2002 jeep liberty kj 3.7L and the fuel pump relay clicking slowly but constantly with ignition in off position? Relay already replaced, so not that. Ideas?

Are you sure that it is in fact the fuel pump relay ? With the key off no B+ voltage is supplied to the relay . Pin 86 at the base ,where the relay plugs into . Fuse #15 a 10 amp fuse is hot with ignition switch in the run or start position . Pin 85 is control from the PCM - engine computer . Pin's 30 & 87 are the load side , fuel pump being the load . If your unfamiliar with the pins i'm talking about , pull the relay out an look on the bottom ,you will see these numbers .Pin #30 will show B+ voltage all the time , pin 86 only with the key on or start .

Fuel pump won't cycle when the key is turned on 93 Chevy astronaut 4.3 eng

For initial prime, you have to check fuel pump relay and wiring circuits. The control/coil side of relay gets voltage from pcm, green wire with white tracer. The ground for control side of relay, should be a chassis ground. Voltage for load side of relay is fuse protected.
This vehicle has an oil pressure switch in fuel pump circuit, just a redundant power supply to the fuel pump. Even w/o the relay the vehicle should start and run, once the oil pressure builds up and that switch closes, the fuel pump will get voltage. There won't be any initial prime w/o the relay.

2003 chevrolet impala starting problems

My first guess would be a bad battery, but most of the time it would not start cranking if you held the key in the crank position.
Could be a problem with the key switch or a relay if the battery is good.
You might want to look at the battery cable connections too.

That is correct for initial prime, then fuel pump works off of crank sensor.Fuel pump is ussually controlled through ECM not Bcm.Have you checked for fuel preasure when you first turn on key,

My fuel pump and or relay?

I would say its most definitely the fuel pump... Around this time is generally when the pump sarts to go out. Its not to hard but it is much easier when you have help cause you do need to take off the bed. Should be able to pick one up for around $300. Its also a good idea to replace fuel filter which is right below the cab. When you turn the key over can you hear the pump at all? you should.
