If you got trans issues, such as slipping, don't change the fluid. It will slip worse.

If the fluid is burnt,it is because you never changed it every 30,000 miles or not more than every two years or so.
Now the transmission, if it slips already, will have to come out, and be rebuilt.
If you got 14 years out of the original with no issues, you got twice the years, most people get

98 crown vic transmission slipping

Change the filter and fluid. This car if the transmission is original should have a torque converter drain. Drain the torque converter also,it gets almost all the fluid out of the transmission. Doing this the car will require almost 12 quarts of fluid. Worth a shot. I change mine at 25000 mile intervals.

Do I have to change a filter when I flush the transmission?

It is recommended by most filter companies and some car companies to change the filter at 100,000 miles. I recommend doing it at 50,000 miles.
Flushing the fluid either replaces it or filters it and puts it back in. Either way the filter still has dirt in it.
It should tell you in t he owners manual and on the dipstick what fluid is recommended.

What type of transmisson oil do I use for a 1996 ford crown victoria and oil filter

The fluid you need is called mercon type ATF this is what ford recommends to use and should say it on the bottle. as for a filter for the transmission or engine I recommend motorcraft filters they meet ford specifications and are available at most auto parts stores.

Transmission jerks on 1985 Crown Vic when cold. Doesn't want to shift, and transmission jerks violently when cold. Also, automatic transmission doesn't like to shift into 3rd gear, unless you exceed 45...

Unless you are low on fluid, I suspect you are in need of a rebuild. I have had similar problems before. Any shop will tell you to try a fluid and filter change. It has never brought one of mine back. I would suggest adding fluid to the top of the 'add fluid' area of the dipstick and no more. It can foam if it is to full, causing similar problems as being to low. I would add that if you have to replace the transmission - you need to consider that the car may not be worth the cost.
Good Luck.

Why is my 96 crown vic shifting hard after take off.

HI. I will list the all areas of concern below:

1. Dirty or clogged transmission filter
2. Low transmission fluid level
3. Faulty solenoid shift pack(Located in the valve body of the transmission)
4. Contaminated transmission fluid reserve.

I would advise to inspect the following areas above, asap. You can start be simply having your transmission flushed and refilled with fresh fluid and a new filter. In most cases, that will correct the hard shifting. If it doesn't; have the transmission solenoid pack inspected by a competent ford tech or a local competent independent mechanic.

Does the crown vic police intercepter take as much oil as the regular crown vic? (when changing the oil and filter)

I ~think~ the 1999 is the same as the 2000 (mine is a 2000 P71)

The 2000 CVPI (Crown Vic Police Interceptor) owners manual recommends the following:

Engine Oil - Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil 5.0 quarts

Transmission Fluid - Motorcraft Mercon V ATF 13.9 quarts (fluids Mercon & Mercon V are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, DO NOT MIX)

Fuel Tank - 19.0 gallons

Break Fluid - DOT 3

Rear Axle Lubricant - Motorcraft 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant 3.75 pints (add 4 oz of Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A or equilavent meeting Ford Spec. EST-M2C118-A for complete refill of Traction-Lok Rear Axles)

Engine Data - 4.6L V8 Engine
Cubic Inches - 281
Required Fuel - 87 Octane
Firing Order - 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Spark Plug Gap - 1.3-1.4 mm (0.052-0.056 inch)
Ignition System - Coil On Plug
Compression Ratio - 10.0:1

I hope this helps!
