There is NO DIPSTICK in the engine compartment. On the side of the transmission, there are two plugs. You remove both plugs and fill one side with fluid, (not sure which side), until the fluid comes out the other drain plug hole. One is lower than the other. Open the lower plug hole. If fluid begins to come out, then it's full. I would suggest to leave it alone unless you suspect a real problem Do you see trans fluid on your driveway ? etc: Reports indicate, do not leave trans fluid change too long for this vehicle. Check you hand book for proper interval.

Unfortunately, you have a closed system transmission, there is no dipstick or filler tube. I have a 96 passport and to have fluid replaced in the transmission you need to take it to a garage that is equipped to fill closed transmissions. This generally runs about $100.00 at the dealership. I was on my way to get my transmission serviced when the trans broke. Don't wait long if you're having issues.

If you have an automatic transmission, you should take it to a mechanic or at least purchase the special fluid temperature gauge needed to do it right. You add fluid through the overfill screw opening found on the transmission fluid pan (there is no dipstick or underhood component on the 96' and later models). It should be located in one corner of the pan; there's also a drain plug is more toward the middle. Never open the overfill screw with the engine stopped - it should always be running and warm.
For a manual transmission, the fill plug is also on the pan, but it is located on the side.
SOURCE: Hiw do I check my Transmission fluid on my 1996
not so hotchevy. trans is sealed, u have to get the trans to operating temp, there is a check/fill plug on the pan near the drain plug, add as needed, but have read it can be messy and easy to overfill, buy a chiltons or haynes manual, my haynes has pics and how to in it relating to trans fluid, i own a 97 passport 3.2l
SOURCE: Don't know how to check or change the transmission
fluid level can only be checked from under the vehicle.there are two plugs on the transmission case,a drain plug & an 'overflow' plug. 'full' is level with the threads at the bottom of the overflow plug,as on a manual transmission.I've heard Honda ATF is recommended.filter is accessed by removing pan.
