Wish I had a fix for it. 1999 cabrio same trouble here. Ours was only without a battery for one week. When we replaced it, the stalling while accelerating happens just as you describe --no trouble idling--and the A/C will not come on. It was recharged at the beginning of this year, was working fine a couple weeks ago. A/C clutch does not engage at all. The light comes on and I've checked for signal at the connector. All good. This only happened after being without electricity for a while. Some anti-theft device, I should imagine, but I haven't solved it.
My 99 Cabrio is experiencing almost exactly the same problem. It only began happening immediately after I had a bad battery replaced. The engine cuts out when I'm accelerating and there seems to be no correlation with speed and the engine losing power in this way. The only consistent thing I've noticed is that when I rev the engine in neutral, it loses power around 40 rpm almost every time.
