1997 Jeep Wrangler sport. 6cyl engine. Has been starting fine for the past few weeks drive about a mile and the battery meter/amp meter goes from mid range to nothing, check engine light comes on? now, I tightened all the connections noticed one of the bolts on the Voltage Regulator was broken causing loose connections but, tightened down best I could. jeep started to 'missfire" having difficulty getting above 50 mph then finally died out after about a week. now Jeep is DOA sitting at a C-Store???? any clues...Oh, plugs and wires and distributor are all new battery is maybe 5 years old, alternator is less than a year old. oldest issue I know of that has never been addressed is the fuel pump. Jeep has been a rough start since I purchased it from an old friend of mine.
just spoke with a mechanic and he agreed. stating that it sounded like a "charging issue." I need to get jeep home then will go nuts getting parts tested. This could be the fuel relay as well. to check the pump/filter you can get a fuel pressure tester from OReilly or somewhere like that. They will let you used it free of charge.
use a digital voltage meter on the battery to verify the 'spikes', Jeep Wrangler gauges are notorious for being erratic (I have a 98 TJ, how's your gas gauge working?)-
the printed circuit board gets weird due to water leaks that find their way to the back of the pod from the top of the roof seal, so it is not unusual for gauges to act strangly.
If that is not the case, it is time for a new alternator.
For1997 Jeep Wrangler 4WD 4.0L MFI 6cyl the Camshaft Position Sensor is located:
Under hood, passenger side, front engine area, mounted on front of intake manifold
Your alternator is regulated by the PCM. It could be the PCM or the ignition switch. Might want to try swapping out the shutdown relay just for grins before getting into the ignition switch. Good luck.
If the pilot bearing was the problem it would make noise with the clutch pushed and go away when you let it out. Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission?
The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.
