according the the haynes book the pump isn't self priming , the pump has to have oil put in the pump to start the prime sequence. A vacuum pump doen't drive the pump on this model,

    the crankshalf does.

You should try to pack the gears and pump cavity with petroleum jelly which will prime the pump and the oil will then displace the jelly. If you use any other kind of grease, the oil will not be able to displace it so make sure you only use petroleum jelly. This is the stuff used in the medical field but works great for this purpose too. Let me know how it goes and whether you have any further questions. Thanks and good luck

Does an oil pump on 96 dodge ram 1500 5.9 have to be primed after installation

Priming should be done if the pump is new or has been drained. Most pump are not self priming.

Had the pressure bypass valve malfunction on my 2.5 jeep put new oil pump in and with 45lbs. Oil pressure motor still sounds dry of oil, what gives?

it's not priming.
that grease trick helps.
is this some china pump off fleabay or a real jeep pump..???
did you do the below.:
1: the grease sure. and then prime the filter and the gallery behind the
filter.
2: With fuel and spark defeated, and spark plugs removed then with pressure gauge attached to sender port, did you crank it to get max pressure (my guess is this is the step you are posting on.)
i never start any engine, (after majors) unless i get #2 to work first the number 3, which is top end oil checks.

the pump is no priming.
In pro shops they make up a priming tool. so new engines are never
started, 1st time dry, ever.
one way is just a tank full of oil and shop air, and 2 valve.

maybe the new pumps relieve valve is stuck open, fully.
i rebuild my own classic engines, after all that work !!! i never
ever, skip these steps.
and for 100% sure, good pressure, and top end oiling on any major work.

2001 Chevy Silverado, 5.3 had only 5 pounds oil pressure, replaced sensor, still 5 lbs of pressure, replace crank driven oil pump, 0 pounds pressure, pickup tube good, o-ring installed correctly on pickup...

remove the pump and the cover off the gears
fill the spaces of the gear teeth with Vaseline or clean grease
this is priming the pump so that a vacuum is created to suck up the oil
new pumps will not be primed
the grease /Vaseline will dissolve in the oil and will not cause any problems

I have just rebuilt a mazda va engine out of a forklift. While priming the oiling system I am not able to get more than 10psi. I have checked all the normal stuff as I am a engine machine shop owner and...

how are you priming the system
before installing the oil pump , you fill it with grease or vaseline
That primes the pump so that when you start cranking it it is producing pressure
to get pressure you need volume and there will be no way that you will get the volume required other than by the pump

Wont start unless manually primed

Turn the ignition key to the ON position without starting the engine

You should hear the fuel pump priming for about a few seconds then shutting itself off.
If not hear replace the engine oil pressure switch
The 3rd wire to that switch is the pumps prime switch lead.
When the engines oil pressure is reached the computer will shut that circuit off and turn on the fuel pump relay
If you hear the pump prime the relay maybe at fault instead

Primer on an oil pump for a 1999 jeep ? put new oil pump on but its not priming and not sure what to do

Best way to draw a prime is to put a long screwdriver blade (no handle) attached to an electric drill down into the oil pump drive slot (distributor removed). I actually use a distributor that has the top cut off without the cam gear, and just attach the drill to the shaft, but the screwdriver works pretty well too.
Only other option is to pack the inside of the pump with light grease, but that would require pan removal and I doubt you want to do that!!
Many pumps are replaced because of low pressure but the cause is generally a bad bearing...If that's the case you may find it difficult to prime.

1992 dodge w-250, took her in for a service...bleed fuel lines...

It sounds like you are talking about a diesel engine as gas engines are self priming. Lift pump or primer pump may be defective. Check for loose fittings or lines and damaged o-rings at filter housing. Sounds like you are sucking air somewhere.
