I have a 2009 Hummer H3T Alpha. I have just noticed that when I push the lock button on my key fob and all the doors lock, the little security symbol flashes on the speedometer. I have never seen this before. Is this normal and was just not working in the past or is there something I should have checked? Thanks for any info.

Hello, Try this: Get in car, turn the key to start, when it don't start let key come back to run (do not turn off) The security light should be blinking, let car set for about ten minutes or until security light stays on steady at that time turn key off for 10 seconds then turn back on (do not go to start) security light will be blinking again wait 10 minutes and security light should go out. Turn key off, wait 10 seconds . Turn key on (do not go to start) security light will be blinking again, wait 10 minuets and security light will go out. Someone tried to steal my 2000 Chevy blazer, had to buy new ignition lock barrel and took out old one and replaced it, key turns but does nothing

You may have a key with a chip in it so you will need to hold the old key that has the correct chip in it next to the ignition switch when you try to start the car.

If the thief damaged the 2 wires going down the column from the sensor ring those will have to be repaired. That is what picks up the signal from the key to tell the car to start.

GM Passlock Security System

Many FixYa posts are asking for ways to bypass the security system and immobilizer. This is what you are up against and explains how the system works. Thanks to our FixYa Professional Vehicle Electronics Wizard Jeff Armer for the factory explanation.

Passlock™ System

The Passlock™ System is provided in order to prevent vehicle theft if the ignition lock cylinder is forced to rotate or the ignition switch is operated while separated from the ignition lock cylinder case. If starting is attempted without authorization from the Passlock™ System, the powertrain control module (PCM) will disable engine starting. Start disable may be in the form of fuel disable or starter disable, depending on engine application.

The components of the Passlock™ System are as follows:

• The ignition lock cylinder and key

• The ignition lock cylinder case, including the Passlock™ sensor

• The ignition switch

• The body control module (BCM)

• The security indicator on the instrument cluster

• The powertrain control module (PCM)

Ignition Lock Cylinder Case, Including the Passlock™ Sensor
The ignition lock cylinder fits inside the ignition lock cylinder case and operates the ignition switch when turned by a key with the proper mechanical cut. When the ignition key is used to turn the ignition lock cylinder to crank, start, a magnet on the lock cylinder passes close to the Passlock™ sensor within the ignition lock cylinder case. The magnet activates the security hall effect sensor in the Passlock™ sensor which completes a circuit from the security sensor signal circuit through a resistor to the security sensor low reference circuit. The resistance value will vary from vehicle to vehicle.

If a magnet from outside of the ignition lock cylinder case is used to attempt to steal the vehicle, the tamper hall effect sensor will be activated. This completes a circuit from the security sensor signal circuit through a tamper resistor to the security sensor low reference circuit bypassing the security resistor. If the ignition switch is forced to rotate without the correct key, or if the ignition lock cylinder is removed by force, the Passlock™ sensor will be damaged and will not operate.

May forums suggest connecting a resister into the transponder receiver circuit, but jumping a 2200 ohms resistor into the wiring of the pass-lock system will do nothing.

2000 Oldsmobile Bravada. It was purchased with the ignition key missing. The car had the ignition cylinder drilled with all but 3/4" of the ignition cylinder remaining. The battery was replaced. The fuel...

If you've done the relearn three times and it still doesn't work, you probably have a bad lock cylinder CASE that was damaged during drilling. Bad case is the most common problem with these old systems. Replace the lock cylinder case and then do the relearn 3 times

This will point to a diagnostic procedure .

Changing the Passlock™ Components
The following components contain codes or passwords, or must learn codes or passwords for the Passlock™ System to allow the vehicle to start:
• The ignition lock cylinder case
• The body control module (BCM)
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
If any of these parts are replaced, a learn procedure must be performed. Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components . If parts are replaced and a learn procedure is not performed, the engine will crank and will not run or will start and stall immediately.

Safelock on 2006 Pontiac Torrent. Randomly prevents starting. Seems to reset after a day or so. Is there a way to disable

It is the passlock system not safelock An you can't just disable it . It is software program into the BCM - body control module an the PCM - powertrain control module .Simply disconnecting the wires from the ignition to the BCM will render your vehicle useless . If an when the security symbol light is on you need to have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . A GM dealer ,Chevy , Buick , Cadillac etc.... we know Pontiac is no longer around. Everything will work except the PCM will not let the fuel injectors work .
Passlock?"¢ System
The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the body control module (BCM). The theft deterrent system is provided in order to prevent the vehicle operation if the correct key is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition key allows the lock cylinder to rotate. The cylinder rotation produces an analog voltage code in the Passlock?"¢ sensor. This voltage code is received by the BCM. The BCM compares the voltage code to the previously learned voltage code. If the codes match, a serial data message is sent from the BCM to the powertrain control module (PCM). The message enables the fuel injector operation.
The design of the Passlock?"¢ system is to prevent vehicle theft by disabling the engine unless the ignition lock cylinder rotates properly by engaging the correct ignition key. The system is similar in concept to the Passkey system. However, the Passlock?"¢ system eliminates the need for any key mounted components. The components of the Passlock?"¢ system are as follows:
?€¢
The ignition lock cylinder

?€¢
The ignition switch

?€¢
The Passlock?"¢ sensor

?€¢
The BCM

?€¢
The security indicator

?€¢
The PCM

How to bypass passlock on 1999 chevy blazer

The most common repair is to replace the ignition lock cylinder due to broken wires inside the steering column. Most common problems related to the Passlock family involve the Passlock sensor. The sensor is part of the ignition lock cylinder on Passlock I and Passlock II systems. ( Where the key goes ), Good-Day!

What to do to reset whne driver unknown come up

it looks like a failure in the theft deterrent system, but Trailvoys contain Passlock security, not PassKey. Passlock consists of a hall-effect sensor and tamper resistor within the ignition cylinder housing, while the PassKey system uses a transponder in the ignition key head.

Passlock isn't affected by contamination of the key, but there are a number of things that can cause it to fail - high or low voltages, problems with the Passlock circuits, module communication failures...
Your best bet is to have the diagnostic trouble codes pulled - there are at least eight associated with Passlock failure

  1. Pull the ignition switch out of the lock cylinder housing.
  2. Disconnect the connector from the ignition switch.
To install:
  1. Verify the alignment of the gear in the ignition switch. If gear is not in position shown, turn gear in ignition switch until you reach the correct position.
  2. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear counterclockwise until it hits a stop. In order to reach a stop while rotating the lock cylinder housing gear you MUST push and hold in the solenoid on the electric park lock.
  3. Connect the connector to the ignition switch.
  4. Insert the ignition switch into the lock cylinder housing. The tabs on the ignition switch MUST be seated inside the lock cylinder housing for proper installation.
  5. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder housing gear clockwise to the start position—allowing it to spring return into the RUN position.
