Rough idle and vibration on a 98 monte carlo 3.1. Changed thermostat, water pump, rad res and alternator and plugs. Still smell hot rad and sometimes sweet smell. Now running rough. Was told 2 different things. Damper pulley and lower intake manifold gasket. Which one is it? Service engine light is on too.

go to a self-serve car wash and hit the bottom of the engine with a water jet to clean it off. then after driving the truck, stop the engine and get underneath and look for the path of water. I like the water pump as a suspect.

there should be holes in power steering pump pulley that when positioned correctly the bole should go through one of those holes, if not then you have to remove the pump

A huge problem with these motors is the plastic upper intake plenum. I just changed one on my fiance's 98 monte. The egr line runs through it and warps the plastic allowing the coolant to leak. A replacement part costs around $130, and comes with the necessary gaskets, takes a few hours to replace. follow the suggested torque specs

you can either remove the steering pump to gain access,if there is no holes in PS pump pulley,you can rent a pulley puller....can be a ***** to get in and use them though....I will drill a hole in it for next time whenever I replace a pump on cars without ....
