I also have a C240 (2000 model) and I also have the BAS malfunction notice appear for my car. I called an RAC engineer to carry out a Diagnostics on my car and the BAS malfunction did not appear on his laptop. He said even if it did, only a MERC dealer service centre could reset the fault as it was a 'brake' issue and only they were allowed. My car does not brake any less or feel any less safe braking or driving, thus I feel the fault is a 'bug'. I hope to go to MERC and get the fault reset because it is becoming a pain as it is the only one showing on my dash!

Crank shaft position sensor is bad. This is the most common failure. Its location is on the rear drivers side of engine, where the transmission bell housing mates to the engine, only one small bolt and a two prong electrical connector hold it on. Usually will not throw a trouble code. If you remove it you can test it with an ohm meter, will have an erratic reading or read open loop, can malfunction intermittently or permanently after parking vehicle and won't restart. Applying some heat source to it during ohm testing with a hot air heat gun will usually cause the sensor to read open loop if your not sure if its bad or not. This reply is probably way to late, but I just happened to come accross it while online. Harry (master certified MBZ diagnostic tech)

The brake light switch is the most common problem. Cheap & easy to replace as a first point. If this doesn't fix it you will need to get the fault codes read from the ABS system. Hope this helps & good luck !

Hello, Check the kickdown switch that is located on the floor below accelerator pedal. Pull the carpet back under the pedal and you will see a black switch with a 2 pin connector. Disconnect the switch and see if this helps. If it does help, your kickdown switch is stuck in the down position and needs replacement. This will cause it not to shift until you are at a high RPM.
If you find this information to be correct would you please enter a "fixya" rating.
Thanks, Gator241
