When ticking over idly sometimes the revs just drop away and the engine cuts out altogether-also sometimes when idle it sonds like the engine is been slightly reved-needle jumps and falls back about 200 revs-a friend told me sounds like the breather-is there such a thing as a breather in a vw golf engine?if not would it be known by another name and could you give me some info about it if possible please?many thanks...

This can be either an engine management issue (bad idle air control) or a transmission issue if an automatic trans (torque converter lock up problem). Idle air control can often be cleaned so = cheap fix. Trans problem not so easy.
have the lifters removed and check for leak down and blocked oil holes and worn plates, broken springs. have the injectors checked for blocked tips . Have the fuel manifold pressure tested to ensure adequate fuel pressure is maintained as that also causes misfiring.
Prognosis is really bad, hate to tell you. Ticking comes from the valve lifters, losing lubrication due to lack of pressure and running dry. At redlights, when revs are at idle, oil pressure drops a lot, and engine really suffers. Have the vehicle taken immediately to a shop for proper diagnose and to see if engine can still be saved. The loss of power comes from the valves not actuating properly. Hydraulic lifters need oil at a decent pressure to "charge" , and if not charged, they will stay compressed, ruining valve lifting operation.
ask a, local mechanic to have a look ,i suspect the idle motor but it could be the throttle sosition sensor under the dash ,its a renault so its impossible to read any diagnostic codes unless its an american market vehicle
You need to check the cable the runs from the gas pedal to the engine, it might be rusty and need some drops of penetrating oil at the point it meets with the engine accelerator valve.
when my mazda mx5 is warmed up the engine idles at 800 revs after about 20 seconds the revs drop to 400 revs, after 5 seconds they pickup again to 800 revs, this pattern is continuous.HELP!!!!!
