I've changed my starter on my 96 cavalier and it sounds like im still having the same problem... When i dont turn the key all the way its tries to start with the loud scraping noise..... It's so embarassing... What can i do to fix it
You may of messed up your flywheel like Scargo said. But before you do all that, there are shims you can get for the starter. The starter gears maybe too close to the flywheel for proper alignment. Using shims will space the starter out farther and let the gears work together. Before you take it to the shop to get the ring gear replaced, I'ld try this soultion first. Basically, it's a trial and error type sisuation.
If, in changing the starter, it had a chewed up gear, then the ring gear on the flywheel is probably now worn out.
This is going to require pulling the engine to fix.

i would disconnect the ground battery cable for about 1 minute and then reconnect it, then try and start the car, hopefully the light will have went out. and hopefully car starts.
Have you changed the fuel filter? Also is there no starter on the car? If not put a starter on it or replace the one that is not there. You may have to clean all cable & starter connections first to see if starter actually works. Good luck!
turn ignition on but dont start it, then turn off for 10 seconds. repeat this 3 times not starting . 4th time try to start if it starts right away its a fuel pump
Hi Sound like the regulator in the alternator is on its way out and it is not re-charging the battery as it should. Time to visit ur local auto electrician for confirmation.
You will also need to swap the speedo cluster. thats where the anti theft module is located. After that you may still need to relearn the key switch.I will look at the wiring diagrams and get back to you on the starter circut in side the vehicle. You may have to change some other things.Talk to ya soon. Dan
