Mine kept telling me both left and right brake lights needed replacing and I noticed that on one of the bulb socket contacts that touch the metal plates on the right brake light, the plastic behind it was melted creating a crevice therefore not making good contact. I added aluminum foil behind the contact (both circled in red in the pic) and the plastic and walla, saved 50 bucks worth of parts ;-). Fixing the right brake light fixed the left one too so tackle the right one first.
I own a 2006 ml50 with 133k, is the bulb holder contacts, they burn a small hole in the taillight metal plate that all the bulb attache to, remove taillight assembly clean and use a soldering iron and added some solder in the small burn hole, it has fixed the problem and the error message has gone away, my was out of warranty the dealer wanted 600.00 to replace the tailight assembly, ps it will return as more miles are put on
