2003 Dodge Durango, SXT. 2 wheel drive, V-8. Transmission digital display reads "R" but car is in PARK. Can't get car into neutral, jumps from "R" to "D", hence, car can't start. Seems to happen only when hot, almost never on cold start. What might problem be? What be approximate, worst case scenario to remedy?

Mine did that. I found that the rod to the transmission was not positioned at the correct distance so it would not go all the way park. Adjusted it so the the lever went from min to max. All was swell.

Probably a bad shift solenoid. Garage charge $250-400 to test and repair.

SOURCE: how to tow a 2003 5.7 liter dodge durango

i am glad you asked
thats i the problem with the electronic select FWD system
when towing a FWD you should put both selectors in neutral this frees the transfer case and the drive shafts
how ever with the electronic system i dont know if it stays in neutral when the car is disconnected from the battery.
so you can make some tryles

  1. put the car in neutral in both selectors "gear and FWD" while the car is running when all the warning bell and stuff have gone off turn off the car
  2. now see if the car can be pushed or towed while the battery is connected
  3. now disconnect the battery and follow step 2
  4. if this works then all is well
i know when towing a FWD car u do need to put the transfer case in neutral to prevent damage
if you have the owners manual check under towing
if you don't, contact your local dealer and see what they say
hope this helps

SOURCE: 2001 dodge durango 4 wheel drive not working loud knocking

You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft. If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.

How do you put a 2001 dodge durango in neutral to dolly tow it. I know to put the transfer case in neutral but can't seem to shift the transfer case into neutral, 4h and 4L and awd shift

If your going to put the front wheels on a dolly then it won't matter whether or not the front end is in neutral,if the rear is going to be lifted then it is a good idea to remove the drive shaft, this will keep the transmission from turning.

Wont go into gear inless in 4Lo

Try putting transmission in neutral, not park, then transfer case to 2 wd or 4 high, then transmission into gear.
