Re: Removing the lock cylinder from a nissan altima...
Hi. Here's the procedure for the Lock cylinder removal.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental air bag deployment. Wait 15 minutes before removing the horn pad. This allows the capacitors in the air bag system to discharge and deactivates the system.
2
Remove the horn pad by removing the screws that attach it to the steering wheel, and unplug the horn contact and yellow air bag connector.
3
Remove the steering wheel by removing the 13/16-inch retaining nut with the 13/16-inch socket and the 1/2-inch drive ratchet in your 1/2 inch-drive socket set. Attach the steering wheel puller to the steering wheel and tighten the center bolt on the puller until the steering wheel pops free. Note the marks on the steering shaft and the hub of the steering wheel that line up to ensure a straight steering wheel later.
4
Remove the lock plate located behind the steering wheel by screwing the lock plate tool to the steering shaft and tightening the jam nut on the tool until the spring-loaded plate is depressed far enough to remove the retaining clip on the steering column with a small screwdriver. Loosen the tool to allow the plate to move up the steering shaft, and remove the tool and then the lock plate from the shaft.
5
Remove the white plastic turn-signal cam located behind the lock plate by taking out the screws attaching it to the steering column. Pull the turn signal cam up and over the steering shaft to expose the lock cylinder retaining screw or release button.
6
Remove the retaining screw or depress the release button and remove the lock cylinder from the steering column. Slide the new lock cylinder into place and install the retaining screw, or turn the key to the lock position and remove the key, to lock the lock cylinder into place.
7
Reinstall the turn signal cam with the original retaining screws. Position the lock plate into place and use the lock plate tool to compress the spring-loaded lock plate. Install the retaining clip and remove the tool. Line up the marks on the steering wheel and steering shaft, and install the steering wheel with the 13/16-inch nut. Tighten securely with the ratchet.
8
Reinstall the horn pad electrical connectors and screw the horn pad securely to the steering wheel. Reconnect the battery terminal. Start the engine from the passenger seat to avoid injury from the air bag if it accidentally deploys.
I have the ignition assembly out and I did it by removing the turn signal switch and drilling the top screws out. I need to replace the lock cylinder from this assembly.
