On a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (XJ), there are typically two speed sensors: the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and the rear axle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission or transfer case, while the rear axle speed sensor is located on the rear differential housing. Here are some tips to locate the rear axle speed sensor:
1. Locate the rear differential housing: The rear differential is typically positioned towards the rear of the vehicle, underneath the rear cargo area. Look for the large metal housing connected to the rear axle.
2. Identify the speed sensor: The rear axle speed sensor is usually mounted on the differential housing itself. It will have a wiring harness connected to it.
3. Follow the wiring harness: Trace the wiring harness from the rear axle speed sensor. It will lead you to a connector that is plugged into the vehicle's wiring system. The connector may be located near the rear axle or along the frame.
4. Inspect the differential housing: Look closely at the differential housing for a small protrusion with a threaded hole. This is where the rear axle speed sensor is installed. It may have a retaining bolt securing it in place.
Lorraine, speed sensors are not located on engines. there are transmission speed sensors and wheel speed sensors.

Input speed sensor is located inside the transmission. The sensor is located next to the sprocket for the input shaft. The sensor is held in place with 2 6mm bolts, one for the sensor, one for the wiring harness.
The transmission sensor or speed sensor is located in most vehicle located on the transmission case. These speed sensors are driven by a gear located on the output shaft. The speed sensor's driven gear can be either machined or fastened by a clip. The driven gear is made by plastic to make it softer than the drive gear. It's located on the end of the vehicle speed sensor.

Here is a how to on replacing the Input and Output speed sensors for a ... Is it the same location as this Year/Model? .... Are these the same sensors that my CEL code saying "Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance"? images for input speed sensor location
This depends on which speed sensor, there are abs speed sensors that are located on each wheel, then a trany speed sensor located on trany, and also trany input and out speed sensors located on trany.
The "Vehicle Speed Sensor" signal is generated by the transmisson output speed sensor. That is the one located at the rear of the case. It is externally mounted. That supplies "vehicle speed" info to the other On-Board Computers. The input turbine speed sensor is located just behind the bell housing area of the case. I believe the trans controller is the only module that needs that info. The Crank Position Sensor give engine RPM info and it is located on the bell housing near the engine block. I hope this helps.
