The car "should" rev higher and then idle down. this is normal programmed behavior. However, when the idle is low the car the motor should run smooth. If there is a "miss" like the motor is lurching, replace the plug wires. If there is a rough idle (revs up and down) then look for a vacuum leak starting with hoses between the motor and PCV valve. Anything squishy or oily in the rubber hoses indicates a hole. Also check the air ducts between the air filter box and the throttle body. If you can't find a leak, spray carburetor cleaner around the intake. If the motor revs faster at some point you have found a leak. Also check for a faulty fuel regulator by removing the rubber hose to the regulator to make sure it's dry and contains no fuel in the rubber hose (any fuel means the regulator has failed and requires replacement or repair by someone who can replace the diaphram).

Pulsing idle

Could be the Throttle Position Sensor. Just changed mine and it now idles properly. Mine would occasionally surge when at idle. Mine would also rev around 1500 to 1800 at startup and take a very long time coming down to normal idle. Changing the TPS has solved all my idle problems.

Idle problem

No need to replace it (idle air bypass valve) just follow this procedure I used while working for a Ford dealer, 90% of the time it cures the problem.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Ford diesel excusion A/C won't cool

Any performance testing re auto A/C requires consistant engine revs highway revs eg 1800 exit ramp eg idle stop start 800revs leading to much reduced A/C compressor speed and therefore performance output .Also all testing its desirable to close the bonnet to control design air flow through the engine bay .Also check under dash passenger side air flow pos a filter on return air duct or something sucked up into paper etc .good luck!

Poor gas mileage, no power in engine

Your problem could be caused by numerous things, how well was this car maintained? A good tune-up should rectify your problems, oil change, air filter change, tranny fluid and filter change, plugs and wire's, coolant flush, timing belt, thermostat, fuel filter are all things that you should have done if they haven't been done recently. Let me know what you have or haven't done on the car and I can try to diagnose further.

Hope this helps
