There's a small door (access hole) on the inside of the hatch door below the window & to the right looking out from the inside. Open it up by pulling the release tab & the door will come off. Stick your finger in between the insulation... about the middle of the opening & to the left a little & you'll feel a little plastic lever. Move it either up or down to unlock. I believe down unlocks it & up locks it.

Alarm goes off for no reason. 97 Jeep grand Cherokee.

There is a security system built-in to the Jeep Grand Cherokee during these years. The reason the alarm goes off is because of a change in the electrical system (like shutting a door) that triggers the alarm. To stop the alarm, either disarm with the remote or unlock the door from the outside with the key. This will shutoff the alarm.
