My Lexus is a 1990 LS 400 4 door automatic, my speedometer needle just dropped to zero and won't move. The odometer is still working so I don't know what exactly happened. I was driving on the highway when it fell to zero and stayed there. Thanks for any help, I have phoned the automotive shop and they are busy until Sept 9th Gaye Patterson

Speedometer not working

This may be the issue:

Both the speedometer and tachometer have a mechanical stop for the needles. The stop is located behind the display board.

The stop and needle contact point tend to develop a sticky residue which mechanically prevents the needle from rising above zero. At the behavior would indicate, the needles independently of one another, tend to stick at zero, yet intermittently, while driving will resume normal reading.

Disassembling the instrument cluster and carefully cleaning the stop and needle contact point with some solvent on a bent cotton swab or pipe cleaner should solve the problem. Just be careful not to break any of the delicate parts.

This problem and solution were first posted by users on the ClubLexus forums, but the brief discussion is difficult to locate.

Speedometer needle no longer gauges...

does it now rest at zero with car stopped? if it doesn't then probably the little spring called the clock spring is broken. on most cars it's pretty involved to fix this, you will have to take the dash apart to get to it. hope that helps

1993 lexus LS 400 speedometer works sometimes

Hi...the needle assembly at the speedometer is faulty. Because your dash instrument is all electronics with no cables or moving parts attached, your whole instrument needs to be placed....hope this helps.
