How do i begin to take off a starter on a 1997 silverado truck?

Did you replace the fuel filter when you replaced the pump ?
Is the pump getting power and ground ?
Do you have normal fuel pressure at the injectors ?

The next time it does not start have someone crank it over while you tap on the mass air flow sensor,if starts then remove the mass air flow sensor and clean the small wires inside of it using a non-chlronated brake cleaner let dry 10 minutes then re-install.

The starter is kind of hidden, under the intake manifold on the rear of the engine.

Make certain you disconnect the battery before beginning repairs.

Good luck! Three 10mm bolt hold the starter in place. you can see two of them, but the third is on top, and will seriously test your patience and exorcise your vocabulary. I have been successful in removing the starter solenoid while the starteris still in the car, which allows you some clearance to remove the third bolt. Otherwise, the exact length combination of socket and extentions on a 1/4" drive ratchet is required over the top of the starter. Make sure you disconnect the battery before you begin.

Starter Motor -1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Engine under cover, if equipped
   • Front engine mount heat protector
   • Starter cover
   • Wires
   • Starter motor
   To install:
   
3. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter motor and cover. Torque the bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs. (26-33 Nm).
   • Wires
   • Front engine mount heat protector. Torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
   • Engine under cover, if equipped

solenoid is on the starter and if you unhook the batter you reset the whole truck unhook for 15 mintunes

try and short starter to see if it turns ,if ok check ignition switch and or fuses

Sounds like you may have faulty field coils within the starter. You can take it off and go to a starter/alternaor shop and have it check, they can ascertain if it is pulling excess amperage, and either make repairs or replacment unit.

I would be willing to bet there is no fire getting to the plugs, check the distributor, ignition module, etc. I will be on around 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night for chatting purposes if you require further assistance
