Have you checked the clutch master cylinder fluid level?

Take the air inlet hose off where it enters the throttle body and take a look at the throttle plates. It is likely that they’re dirty and have a build-up of carbon deposits. That is the most common cause for stalling that we see in the shop for your vehicle. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning to cure the stalling problem. There is an idle speed setting on your Jeep, but to check and/or perform this service step requires the use of a computer scan tool for your vehicle. If the cleaning doesn’t help ask a repair facility to check and reset, if needed, the minimum idle speed on your Jeep.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.

I had the same problem, but in first gear. What I did to free it up, with the shifter out of the transmission, looking down into the hole you will see two linkages side by side with a slot in each. The trouble is the linkage got out of sink. What you do is put a large screw driver into (shifter lever) slot and try to move them (they are hard to move) to you find neutral.

Check all your hydraulic connections for seepage . If you find nothing leaking, check where the rod goes into the master cylinder under the dashboard...If still nothing, I'd change the master cyl, as it is likely internally bypassing and permitting the clutch to release. PS it takesa a special "touch" to shift gears without using the clutch, if you cannot do that don't drive it Till you get it fixed...you will damage synchros and will need to have trans removed and rebuilt. $$$you don't want to spend!!!

If you put it in reverse before starting it, does it grind? Or pop out of reverse? or what?
With the engine running, and the clutch depressed, does it grind as soon as you try to shift into reverse, or only when you start letting the clutch out?
Reverse gear is not synchronized. Most likely the clutch is not fully releasing, it may need an adjustment. With it in first, how far up do you have to let the pedal before the car starts moving? It should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the total pedal travel. With the car stopped and the clutch fully depressed, can you easily shift it in and out of the higher gears (4-6)?
It may be that the shift linkage needs adjustment. Neither of these adjustments are expensive.
